Former Michigan State basketball player Keith Appling was sentenced on Friday before Judge Michael Hathaway — receiving 18 to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder, in connection to the May 2021 shooting and death of Clyde Edmonds.
A former Michigan State University basketball star pleaded guilty Monday to second-degree murder and a firearm charge in the fatal 2021 shooting of a Detroit man. Keith Damon Appling, 31, pleaded guilty in Wayne County Circuit Court to one count each of second-degree murder and felony firearm in the killing of Clyde Edmonds, 66, prosecutor Kym Worthy said.
The Detroit Pershing prep star played at Michigan State from 2010 to 2014. Appling also played pro basketball overseas and had two brief contracts with the NBA's Orlando Magic. He was charged in Edmonds' murder in June 2021. Prosecutors said Appling fatally shot Edmonds on May 22, 2021, after the men argued over a handgun. Edmonds was pronounced dead at a hospital. His wife and Appling's mother are first cousins, authorities said.

On January 18, 2016, Grier made a deal. The Magic and coach Scott Skiles, another former MSU star, called and wanted to sign Appling to a 10-day contract. Grief called and gave his client the news. Appling’s response? “He actually told us he was firing us as we gave him that great news,” Grier recalled.

A former Michigan State University basketball star was ordered to remain in jail Thursday during his first court appearance on murder and other charges in Detroit. Defense attorney Andrew Abood asked for a bond, saying Keith Appling had always appeared in court in previous cases. But a magistrate denied bond, noting the first-degree murder charge.

A judge ordered that Appling serve 5 years probation which includes serving one year in the Wayne County jail for carrying a concealed weapon and assaulting, obstructing or resisting arrest. Appling pleaded guilty to the charges in connection to a traffic stop that took place in August of 2016. Appling was pulled over at Russell and E. Seven Mile. After initially stopping in his 2013 blue Dodge Challenger, police say he fled and tossed a handgun out the window.
