After winning his second PBA title with TNT, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson had a different tone when asked about his NBA ambitions. “For sure, it’s still the highest league in the world. It’ll always be in my mind but I feel like at a point in your life, God puts you where you need to be and I think where we go wrong is we fight that,” Hollis-Jefferson told reporters after the title victory.

Rondae Hollis-Jefferson: I was going to let it slide and play out the way it's supposed to but there's no way I can sit back and let people discredit all the work I've put in. Mentally, physically, and skillfully. My game has evolved in many ways while still having the tools that got me to the NBA. I'm confused as to why I can't get an opportunity? OK, I made mistakes at 24 that I wouldn't make at 30. But that's life, you learn from those mistakes. I'm not asking for anything other than a chance. shit, I'll sleep in the gym. You can't say it's just the shooting component anymore. There are 3/4 players on almost every team that can't make a shot outside of the paint. But it's not about just shooting if you want to win. I can come off the bench and give any team a spark.

Rondae Hollis-Jefferson: I sit there and travel all over the world to hoop (it's nice) but I miss my family every day (take them with you). I'm not about to drag babies from country to country (they need stability). All I need is a shot to help a team and be close to what really matters. I know mad players and staff in the NBA and [players] union. And majority of these folks speak highly of me and know I'd do whatever to win and whatever if they needed me to help them in any way. But when you're really looking for someone, they are gone until you are weak enough to break down.

After facing Thomas Walkup with Greece and Jordan’s Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, then, the American national team will have to deal with another countryman who wears the jersey of another place in the world. Being asked how he feels about his ongoing situation, Team USA’s head coach Steve Kerr kept it simple. “I don’t mind it at all, I think it’s a great opportunity for those guys to play in FIBA. Almost every team we play against feels like they have one American player on board, it’s the rule for FIBA and it’s fine for us. I like the opportunity for those players”, he commented on guys like Perry and Walkup.

He moves and shoots the same way, even some mannerisms of Kobe, like the way he moves his shoulder when he is about to shoot free throws, are there. It’s uncanny to watch, considering the fact that during his years in the NBA and also in Europe when he played most notably for Besiktas during the 2021-22 season, he didn’t move and played like that. However, the resemblance is obvious. And as he said with a smile, his good friend Shabazz Napier, who will play this season in Serbia for Crvena Zvezda “keeps telling me to take a DNA test, Kobe is my cousin and I didn’t know it”.

Anthony Edwards, Team USA blow out Jordan 110-62 to finish pool play 3-0

Team USA's Anthony Edwards and Jordan's Rondae Hollis-Jefferson added some spice to what otherwise would have been a low-drama game, staging an American playground-style duel that isn't normally seen at the FIBA World Cup. The two shooting guards went back-and-forth racking up points and giving the crowd at Mall of Asia Arena something to pay attention to besides the score as Team USA won 110-62 on Wednesday to finish pool play 3-0. The U.S. moves on to the World Cup's second round and will play Montenegro, which went 2-1 to advance out of its group, on Friday.

Hollis-Jefferson, a six-year NBA veteran, came in as the event's second-leading scorer and one of the happy stories of the first week. "We haven't seen each other since then, so it was fun," Edwards said. "And yeah, we was talking with smack out there for sure." Edwards threw in several dunks, three 3-pointers and even a behind-the-back pass. He finished with 22 points in 19 minutes and also had eight rebounds and four assists. Edwards also fouled Hollis-Jefferson twice, which is something the 28-year-old has become an expert at while playing overseas the past two seasons. After drawing 15 fouls in a 39-point showing against New Zealand on Monday, Hollis-Jefferson drove, twisted and baited the U.S. into fouling him eight times.

After being out of the NBA since the 2020-21 season, Hollis-Jefferson reevaluated his life and career and has been making many changes. He has lost about 15 pounds, becoming a pescatarian who typically eats only one meal a day. He battled stomach problems that he said sometimes affected his mood and has felt better since making the switch. He started working with a leadership adviser to help alter his outlook on life.

A Philadelphia-area native who grew up idolizing Bryant, Hollis-Jefferson has cut his hair like Bryant, is wearing an armband like Bryant, wears Bryant's familiar No. 24 and has mimicked everything from Bryant's footwork to his free throw routine to his poses after big shots. If he wasn't left handed, there were moments where you'd genuinely not believe your eyes. "He's a legend and you can only dream of being compared to someone like him," Hollis-Jefferson said. "But I'm nowhere near close to Kobe. I've tried to be a hard worker like he was and I feel his energy. I also know a lot of people that knew him so I've been hearing stories about him my whole life."
