In a move that bucked the national trend, Cal freshman forward Ivan Rabb decided he will return for his sophomore season. He let the 8:59 p.m. Sunday deadline for underclassmen to declare for the NBA draft pass with no public acknowledgment of his plans. At 9:03 p.m., head coach Cuonzo Martin announced through a university-issued news release that Rabb is staying in Berkeley. He is the only non-senior who was widely projected to go in the first round June 23 who won’t at least test the professional waters.
New Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin, who played briefly in the NBA before pursuing his coaching career, said he enjoyed getting to know Harris as he went through individual workouts at Tennessee in April. "First of all, Tobias is a wonderful young man. He had a great freshman season, but more importantly he also conducts himself in all the right ways off the court. There's no doubt he'll be successful," Harris said. "He'll always be a Tennessee Volunteer, and just like every other former player, we're always here for him. He's part of the family." His teammate, junior guard Scotty Hopson, is also expected to remain in the NBA draft. The deadline for players to decide whether to remain in the draft or return to school is Sunday.
Tennessee men's basketball players Tobias Harris and Scotty Hopson have submitted paperwork to make themselves eligible for the NBA draft, UT associate sports information director Tom Satkowiak confirmed Monday. New Vols Coach Cuonzo Martin said Monday he wasn't surprised by the players' decisions. Both had indicated since the end of the season that they planned to test the NBA draft waters. The deadline for underclassmen to enter the draft was 11:59 p.m. Sunday.
Tobias Harris said he might return to Tennessee for another season. From the sounds of it, that's largely because of the Freshman All-American forward's budding relationship with new men's basketball coach Cuonzo Martin. "I think the coaching staff is really a great group of guys; they are pretty much amazing,'' said Harris, who met with the media Tuesday for the first time since Martin was hired on March 27. "I think people need to give them more respect,'' he said. "Coach Martin, he's tough, and a lot of people don't know that. He's pushing me, not only in these workouts, but as a person, also.''
