During a scrum at the Nets practice facility in Sunset Park, ESPN’s Friedell cut to the chase and told Irving that people wanted to hear “a yes or no” on whether he was antisemitic. Irving replied, “I cannot be antisemitic if I know where I come from.” The answer immediately entered the pantheon of failed sports non-denial denials, alongside Mark McGwire’s steroid-era “I’m not here to talk about the past.” The Nets suspended him that day. Kyrie’s defenders explain his stonewalling as exasperation. “Kyrie felt almost insulted, like, ‘Man, you guys think I’m racist? I’m not even entertaining that,’” says Phil Handy, a mentor from his time with the Cavaliers, now an assistant coach with the Lakers.

James has discussed his pursuit of the hallowed …

James has discussed his pursuit of the hallowed milestone umpteen times by now. On Thursday, though, he waxed poetic on the record more extensively than ever before. LeBron called Abdul-Jabbar’s long-standing record one of the “greatest” in sports and likened it to the historic 1998 MLB home run chase and the slugging boom of that era. “I think it’s one of the greatest records in sports in general,” said LeBron. “I think it’s up there with the home run record in baseball. Just one of those records that you just don’t ever see, or think, will ever be broken. And then you end up seeing guys — Hank Aaron had had it for so long, and then you see the likes of (Sammy Sosa) and Mark McGwire and those guys start climbing that. It was like ‘Oh, man, this thing could really happen.’ And you start really watching it and paying attention to it, and you’re seeing Sammy or Mark McGwire go up to bat and you’re like, ‘They got a chance to knock it out every single time.'”

According to Rocky Gettys, Smoothie King's vice president of product development, some of the retail products found on Smoothie King's shelves were found to contain substances on the NBA's prohibited list. The substances included two steroid hormones: dehydroepiandrosterone, commonly known as DHEA, and androstenedione, made famous by home run king Mark McGwire, who said he took the over-the-counter muscle enhancer before it was banned by Major League Baseball in 2004. "Our menu of smoothies was not impacted at all," Gettys said. Instead, the banned substances were present in "a few nutritional supplements we carried, and which make up less than 1 percent of our system-wide sales."
