NBA champion Mo Williams is locked in at his HBCU. Jackson State University announced a contract extension for head men’s basketball coach Mo Williams, cementing his role as a pivotal leader for the Tigers’ program.
Jackson State head men’s basketball coach and former NBA all-star Mo Williams has been named to the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2025. The Jackson, Mississippi native coached at fellow SWAC HBCU Alabama State before returning to his hometown to coach at Jackson State in 2022.
A familiar face is set to join NBA champion Mo Williams' Jackson State basketball program. Sunday, Williams’ son, Mike Williams, announced on Instagram that he has committed to play for his father at JSU.
In a statement, Jackson State expressed gratitude for the generous support extended to the educational institution by the Basketball Hall of Famer. “We are grateful to Mr. Charles Barkley for making this generous investment into Jackson State University,” said JSU Acting President Elayne Hayes-Anthony, Ph.D. “It is transformative to have leaders, like Mr. Barkley, recognize the important work we’re doing and decide to sow into our mission to prepare students for the global workforce. This is a fantastic way to close out the fiscal year, and his pledge of $100,000 annually for the next ten years will provide a continuous resource to support institutional priorities at a greater level and to further carry out our strategic plan to elevate this great institution.”
Barkley is giving another million to Jackson State University in Mississippi. He's previously made donations to Alabama A&M, Clark Atlanta, Miles College, Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Tuskegee University; all are HBCUs.

Mississippi legend and NBA champion Mo Williams has accepted a job to become the new men’s basketball coach for Jackson State University, according to Jeff Goodman with Stadium. The news comes after a report by Goodman earlier this month stating that Wayne Brent was expected to retire at the end of the 2021-22 season.

The New Orleans Hornets announced today that they have requested waivers on guard Trey Johnson. Johnson appeared in 11 regular season games this season, averaging 1.9 points and 1.1 rebounds per game in 5.5 minutes. The Jackson State University product has appeared in 23 career NBA games in three seasons of play with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Toronto Raptors, Los Angeles Lakers and Hornets.
Former Kansas men’s basketball assistant coach Ed Manning, father of current assistant coach Danny Manning, died Friday morning in at Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. Ed Manning, who battled a long-standing heart condition, was 68. “This is a huge loss for our family and the Jayhawk family,” Danny Manning said. “Many people have already reached out to us in such a short period and we are very grateful for all the thoughts, well wishes and prayers for my father and for us.” Manning played basketball collegiately at Jackson State in Jackson, Miss. He then played professionally in the NBA, ABA and overseas.
