Pate signed to play with Providence but is awaiting word from the NCAA as to whether he’s eligible for this season. The line between college and professional basketball continues to get increasingly blurry, but there have been dozens of cases of players who played professionally overseas being cleared to play in the NCAA. Pate’s case is unique because of his age (20) and that he turned down an NBA contract to potentially retain his college eligibility.
A hearing on former Purdue basketball player Trey Kaufman-Renn's motion against the NCAA has been rescheduled for Sept. 8. The hearing was originally scheduled for Tuesday in Clark County Circuit Court No. 6. Judge Kyle P. Williams granted the NCAA's motion to move the hearing back one week.
Former Purdue basketball forward Trey Kaufman-Renn, now with the Minnesota Timberwolves, has asked a court to force the NCAA to allow him to play a sixth season. A return to the Boilermakers is unlikely, even if a judge grants the motion Kaufman-Renn filed in Clark County, Indiana, on Aug. 26. A hearing with Clark County Circuit Court No. 6 Judge Kyle P. Williams has been set for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Kaufman-Renn suffered a knee injury in early November of that 2021-22 freshman season. After undergoing surgery, he opted for the redshirt season. Under the old model, an athlete who lost all or most of a season of eligibility – even one who also took a redshirt season – could seek a waiver to have that year of eligibility reinstated. The NCAA’s new rules closed that exception, so an athlete who loses one of their five seasons to eligibility has no waiver to pursue.
