As part of the 2025 NBA All-Star Festivities, the Morehouse College Athletics Maroon Tigers and Tuskegee University Golden Tigers faced off Saturday in the fourth annual NBA HBCU Classic presented by AT&T at Oakland Arena in Oakland, Calif. Tuskegee was able to hang on in the end, defeating Morehouse 68-55. Tuskegee’s Kusamae Draper led the Golden Tigers with 22 points, while Kevin Sesberry and D’Anthony Pennington added 19 and 16 points, respectively.

The National Basketball Players Association has hired Golden State Warriors executive David Kelly to be its managing director and general counsel. Kelly, a Morehouse College and University of Illinois Law School graduate, had served as the Warriors’ chief legal officer. In conjunction with Kelly’s arrival, longtime union negotiator Ron Klempner will transition from general counsel to a new role as senior counsel on labor relations.

The Hawks hosted an MLK Day of Service to address food insecurity on Jan. 13. Typically, on MLK Day, the Hawks would host a game to celebrate King’s legacy with a gospel choir announce their starting lineup. Celtics forward Xavier Tillman participated in an MLK-themed shirt design activity with 30 youth from Family Independence and Casa Esperanza – Latinas y Niños on Jan. 7. The Celtics hosted an HBCU Experience Event on Jan. 16 centering on Dr. King’s HBCU experience at Morehouse College in Atlanta. The Celtics also plan to celebrate King’s legacy during Saturday’s game against the Hawks with players wearing the MLK shooting shirts, player addresses and a national anthem performance by civil rights activist and singer Danny Rivera.

Phoenix Suns guard Chris Paul is continuing to put the spotlight on historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) with the arrival of a new college basketball tournament, The Undefeated has learned. Paul and the Basketball Hall of Fame have partnered in the development of the Chris Paul HBCU Tip-Off on Nov. 22-23 at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. The two-day doubleheader will feature HBCUs Morehouse College, Virginia Union, West Virginia State and Winston-Salem State. The games are also expected to be televised nationally, a source said.

Michael Jordan and Nike's Jordan Brand are giving $1 million to Morehouse College to boost journalism and sports-related studies. The gift announced Friday will help enrich its journalism and sports program that was originally launched with a donation from director and actor Spike Lee. The school, in a news release, said the donation will help fund scholarships, technology and educational programming for students in those fields.

In partnership with Morehouse College and Coursera, Chris Webber is set to debut "Activism in Sports and Culture," a new online course at the HBCU. “Nelson Mandela said sports have the power to change the world. This man was locked away for 27 years in prison and says it’s more powerful than government in causing political change. And he’s right because it’s really the voice of the people,” Webber said.

Why Not Us: North Carolina Central University Men’s Basketball, premiering Feb. 12, is the first premium project to debut under The Undefeated on ESPN+, a partnership between the streamer and its race- and culture-focused sister brand. Chris Paul’s production company, Ohh Dip!!!, originated the idea for the eight-episode series and brought it to ESPN, and filming commenced in the fall as the 2020-21 college basketball season opened amid sustained COVID uncertainty. To help promote the series, Paul also shot one-on-one conversations with famous HBCU alums, including Morehouse’s Spike Lee and Howard’s Taraji P. Henson, which will live on on ESPN+.
