After losing a friendly wager over the NBA finals, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) gave Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau a basket of chocolates and wine. Pelosi presented the gifts Thursday afternoon on Capitol Hill, congratulating Trudeau and the Raptors, who were “so great that they were able to win over a great championship team, the Golden State Warriors.”
Justin Trudeau and U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are betting on the NBA Finals, with the prime minister putting bagels and beer up against wine and chocolate.
Ahead of the game, Pelosi, who is from San Francisco and an ardent Warriors fan, says she’ll send Ghirardelli chocolate, California wine and a smattering of almonds and walnuts from her home state should Golden State fail to win yet another title. Trudeau says in a statement that the chocolate and a glass of California wine will “pair nicely with the Raptors’ first NBA title.”
Current Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was waiting outside the Warriors locker room postgame, greeting all the players as they exited the arena. The current political landscape — Pelosi is in a very public battle with President Donald Trump right now about the government shutdown over border security policy — created an interesting scene. A few of the players stopped to encourage Pelosi, flipping the typical script of fan rooting an athlete. “Stay strong. We’re pulling for you,” one player told her.

There’s no invitation yet for a visit with President Trump, but the Warriors have a standing offer from House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco and East Bay Rep. Barbara Lee to come to the U.S. Capitol to celebrate their NBA championship. There’s been much speculation about whether the team would accept an invitation from the White House. In the meantime, Pelosi and Lee said Tuesday that the Warriors and their families would be welcome on Capitol Hill, describing the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue as “the heart of our democracy.” “In celebration of your victory, we would be delighted to welcome you publicly as a team or personally as families to the United States Capitol,” Pelosi and Lee wrote to Warriors head coach Steve Kerr and the team. “Please consider this as a blanket invitation whenever your individual schedules allow.”
President Barack Obama will host a fundraiser for House Democrats at the home of former NBA star Alonzo Mourning. That's according to an invitation to the event obtained by The Associated Press. The event in Miami on March 20 will benefit the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and other lawmakers will also attend.
