Georgetown freshman Thomas Sorber is drawing the interest of several teams in the lottery and also just outside the lottery ahead of Wednesday’s NBA Draft. The 6-foot-10 Trenton, N.J. native has attracted interest from the Atlanta Hawks (which pick at Nos. 13 and 22) and San Antonio Spurs (No. 14) -- the last two picks in the lottery. Sorber is also drawing attention from the Minnesota Timberwolves (No. 17) and Brooklyn Nets (Nos. 19, 26 and 27), NJ Advance Media has learned.
Murphy was asked Monday if that discussion is real. “It’s real in the sense there’s a serious conversation,” Murphy told reporters at the Statehouse in Trenton. “We’re blessed with a good relationship with these guys. Both the owners and the professionals who run Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment. … Both of them are already relevant in New Jersey.”
Another day passed Tuesday without a sentence in the fraud case of a former NBA player convicted of running a real estate Ponzi scheme. Former University of Connecticut and New Jersey Nets guard Tate George appeared in federal court in Trenton on Tuesday for the continuation of a hearing that spanned two days earlier this month. The parties are scheduled to return to court Wednesday morning. George has been jailed since his 2013 conviction on four counts of wire fraud. Each count carries a maximum 20-year sentence, but George is expected to face considerably less time.
A former NBA player best known for his 1990 tournament buzzer-beater for Connecticut is on trial this week in Trenton, N.J., on federal charges of wire fraud. Tate George is accused of carrying out a Ponzi scheme from 2005 to early 2011, netting him $2 million. He has denied wrongdoing. Prosecutors say George used money investors sank into his purported real estate firm to pay previous investors or for home improvements and personal expenses.
