Arizona standout guard Caleb Love announced Tuesday he is declaring for the NBA Draft while maintaining his eligibility to return to college.
North Carolina sophomore guard Caleb Love has decided he will not test the NBA Draft waters and will return to Chapel Hill for his junior season.
Caleb Love was mainly a shooting guard in high school, and it shows. Does that mean he’ll never be an NBA-caliber point? Not at all. But point guard is the toughest position for a freshman to pick up in Williams’ system, and between that and Love’s shortcomings, he still has a long way to go. He has shown flashes of shot-making, shot-creating and elite defense. Now he needs to do all that at once, and much more consistently. There is still a chance Love declares — based on what I’ve heard, it’s not out of the picture — but he’d be much better served coming back and ironing out the kinks.
Love has skill as a shot creator. He has juice as an athlete, playing with shiftiness and burst. He can separate from defenders. Because of that, I would not write off Love as a long-term prospect. But he has a long way to go to become a pro. I asked a few NBA scouts about Love. They said they would not advocate for their teams to take Love because he is so far away from being productive at the college level, let alone in the NBA
