Let’s make this clear: In rebuilding, in racing to the bottom of the league standings, the Wizards are doing what they must do in search of a brighter future. In the NBA, a team simply must have at least one star to contend (and preferably, two stars or more). The best way for Washington to bring aboard high-level talent is through the draft. If the Wizards finish with the league’s worst record, they would still be unlikely to win the top pick and have the right to draft Cooper Flagg or Ace Bailey. But having the worst record at least would ensure they would receive no worse than the fifth pick. At 2-15, Washington is where it needs to be. It’s the league’s worst record. Still, that race-to-the-bottom approach often creates collateral damage. Can Bub Carrington, Bilal Coulibaly, Kyshawn George and Alex Sarr emerge unscathed from all this losing and keep growing? “To me, we don’t really have a choice,” George said as he sat at his locker after Wednesday’s loss. “It’s too easy to just give up, and you lean on the people that are around you. I think we have a great group of guys as persons that hold each other accountable. We’re all working toward the same goal — the players and the coaching staff and the whole organization. So, it’s too easy to just say, ‘OK, this is what it is, and we’re not going to get better.’”
There were nearly as many Celtics fans as Wizards faithful. And Brogdon is mostly here to teach youngsters such as Bub Carrington and Kyshawn George how to be professionals. “It’s definitely a mind-set shift,” he said. “You go from a championship-caliber team to a team that’s trying to rebuild the right way in Portland, and a team in Washington that’s trying to retool and build it the right way. For me, it’s about leading and being myself in these situations.”
Ohn Youngmisuk: Steph Curry and Draymond Green had praise for the Wizards’ youngsters. Draymond said he hasn’t seen a Wizards team compete like this in years. He cited Bub Carrington and Kyshawn George specifically and how they brought the energy with the trash talking. “They earned my respect.”
Rival scouts will watch closely because Coulibaly ranks among the league’s most interesting development stories. Although the Wizards now have a large number of intriguing prospects, including rookie first-round picks Alex Sarr, Bub Carrington and Kyshawn George, perhaps none of the other youngsters has the potential upside that Coulibaly has. If everything goes right in the years ahead, Coulibaly could become the kind of versatile two-way wing terror whom all contending clubs covet. The Athletic interviewed four talent evaluators across the league to learn how they regard Coulibaly, and they were granted anonymity because their teams prohibit them from publicly discussing players from rival clubs. All of the evaluators are intrigued by Coulibaly’s potential, but they also acknowledged that he is a difficult player to project. Scout A, for instance, labeled him “a promising project.”
