Shane Battier is coming back to Memphis. No, not to run for mayor or anything. To join the raucous good fun at Staxtacular, the shindig Shane and Heidi Battier — along with Brian Cardinal and his wife, Danielle — started 13 years ago to raise money for the Stax Music Academy. Q: How do you feel about coming back? Shane Battier: “We’re excited. Memphis will always hold a very special place in our hearts, it’s where we broke into the NBA, where we started our adult life, where we made many friendships that we still hold dear today. The NBA world is transient. After being in the league for 15, 16 years, when you find deep relationships, you treasure them. We love Memphis, we will always be Memphians even though we live in Miami now. It will be a real treat to come back.”
Cardinal played for the Mavericks on the 2011 championship team and was one of the leaders of the locker room. He knows the culture that coach Rick Carlisle and the staff have created and believes it will be a terrific influence on Hammons. Asked if Hammons could have as good a career as Brian Cardinal, who was drafted 44th in 2000 and played a dozen NBA seasons, the always self-deprecating Cardinal said: "He hasn't even played a pro game and he's already surpassed Brian Cardinal as an NBA player."

Cardinal, 35, is a free agent after 12 years in the league. He knows his NBA days are numbered. He hopes they're not yet expired. “I'd like to play another year and see where that goes, but at the same time I understand it' a crazy business,” Cardinal said after the Purdue alumni game Saturday at Mackey Arena. “I'm awfully thankful for the previous 12 years. I've played longer than anybody would have expected, myself included. If I can sneak out another year, it'd be great.”
Brian Cardinal: Don't ever underestimate the heart of a CHAMPION!!! The NBA FINALS!!! That atmosphere. That feeling. That pressure.... Pure AWESOMENESS!!!
Brian Cardinal: PEJAAAAAA, was critical to our Championship run!!!! Thanks for a fantastic ride this past season... The NBA will miss you my friend!
The Dallas Mavericks have re-signed veteran forward Brian Cardinal. The defending NBA champions announced the move Monday. Terms of the deal weren't released, but Cardinal will likely get the veteran minimum of just over $1.3 million.
Two newly minted Mavericks arrived in town Sunday and were able to watch the evening practice, which included a scrimmage. Vince Carter and Brian Cardinal, both free agents, did not take part in the practice because their paperwork had not yet been filed with the league.

Carter will not officially clear waivers until Monday afternoon, which means that's the earliest he will be able to sign his contract. There have been no complications with the deal and all signs point to a signing Monday. Carter's deal will be for the mid-level exception, which for the Mavericks will be $3 million because they have nudged into luxury-tax territory. It will go on the books as a three-year deal although years two and three are only partially guaranteed.
Brian Cardinal: Jumping on a plane tomorrow headed for the Big D! Excited to be back with the Mavs!!! Let's get it!!! #MFFL #FB #BoilerUp
Also, Bartelstein said his other Mavs client, forward Brian Cardinal, is not yet a lock to return to the Mavs and he did not put a timetable on when Cardinal would likely sign a deal.
