Justin Russo: Asked Jeff Van Gundy why Clippers’ defense has improved so much in the last two months: “We’re faster now. You can make up a lot of different reasons, but we’re a lot faster.” Van Gundy also praised Kris Dunn for his ability to always “help your tenacity and your anticipation.”

Law Murray: Jeff Van Gundy: “If you don’t like Ty, you’re the asshole.”

Law Murray: You all can thank @LaurenMRosen for the context More JVG on T. Lue: "He's not only a brilliant coach, but the thing I think he gets that eludes others is that he wants happiness and success for everybody. And I believe that is the key to life."

Woj: Stephen, Jeff Van Gundy had your role a few years ago and coached a couple cycles of America Cup, World Cup qualifying. Your coaching tree goes back with Jeff. He worked with your dad, the legendary Paul Silas with the Knicks. I think you've probably known Jeff since you were a kid. Was he somebody whose brain you picked going into this experience? Stephen Silas: Absolutely. He was the first person I called. So Sean Ford, who's amazing by the way, he called me and asked me if I wanted to do it and he was like, ’reach out to Jeff.’ So the first call I made was to Jeff and Jeff was like absolutely do it. He was like there's so much that's good about it. There's guys who come in and really want to work and there's a lot of guys who want to be there and haven't played for their country before or haven't worn the USA on their chest and that's a cool thing as well. But the guys that we get, the guys that Sean picks are usually just great guys who are willing and able to do whatever you want them to do. But, Jeff, I lean on Jeff quite a bit. Like when I was a head coach of Houston, I used to call Jeff, we would go to lunch and spend a lot of time together. He's a basketball genius, but he's also really good at the people part and the group dynamic part. So yeah, whether it's USA basketball or playing groups or whatever, Jeff is someone I've always leaned on.

James Harden on coach Jeff Van Gundy: "He's a psycho in a good way... He'll write me notes and leave them in my locker."

Ian Begley: Ty Lue credits his players & assistant Jeff Van Gundy for LAC’s improved defense after NBA Cup. Clips have won 8 of 9 & have No. 8 defense in that span. “Over the last 10-12 games, we’ve put ourselves in position to be really good defensively & that’s because of JVG.”

Ian Begley: Lue said Van Gundy, the last coach to lead NYK to a Finals, adjusted Clips’ defense during their days off amid NBA Cup. “JVG, the work he puts in, studying all the different teams, studying the league, how the game is being played and now” was critical, Lue said.

Van Gundy had been upset the night before that Paul had openly questioned how the coaching staff had used Leonard's limited minutes toward the end of the team's loss to the Dallas Mavericks, their seventh in eight games. Leonard was coming off a minutes restriction and was defending a red-hot Klay Thompson, known for his movement without the ball. That took a lot of energy, Paul had argued. Van Gundy accused Paul of changing the coverage without approval. Paul responded that he had only "suggested" switching Leonard's defensive assignment because he had bumped up against his minutes restriction.

[Haynes] During the Clipper loss to the Mavericks, Chris Paul told Kawhi that he should to switch off Klay because Kawhi was struggling to keep up with him. Jeff Van Gundy told Chris Paul “You might’ve had leeway in other places to change up defensive coverages, but you don’t have that leeway here”

Law Murray: Derrick Jones Jr. says that he has been told by Jeff Van Gundy to be more aggressive defensively "I felt like I wasn't as aggressive as he wanted me to be… I feel like I could have been a lot more active on the defensive end. That's something that I'm trying to do right now"

Law Murray: Asked Tyronn Lue about John Collins and defense T Lue says that Collins has been showing up early to work with Jeff Van Gundy and watch film. Anticipates finding out how switchable he can be, whether he can guard 1-4. Doesn't sound like he'll be used at 5 against true centers. pic.x.com/0llUnfHsJU

ESPN’s finals crew has been in flux for years since it fired Breen’s longtime analysts, Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson, in the summer of 2023. ESPN had company-wide layoffs, and part of the network’s reasoning for singling out Van Gundy and Jackson was because of their perceived continued desire to coach, according to sources briefed on the move. The NBA was not a fan of Van Gundy criticizing officials, according to those sources.
The Knicks have painted this as a Leon Rose-led decision, but few in league circles seem to be buying it. Rose and Thibodeau were close long before Rose became the Knicks' lead basketball decision-maker in March 2020. The Knicks, in fact, hired Thibs as their new coach entering the 2020-21 season at Rose's strong insistence. Dolan, meanwhile, has long been described by league observers well-acquainted with New York's organizational dynamics as a non-fan ... which some attribute to Thibodeau's connections as a staff member to what one source described as "the old Knicks." It's a reference to the Knicks' teams coached by Jeff Van Gundy in the late 1990s that, until the past five seasons with Thibs in charge, stood as the last previous successful era of Knicks basketball.
