George Gervin, a Detroit native and NBA Hall of Famer, will have his legacy further cemented in bronze at his alma mater Eastern Michigan University. In collaboration with EMU, GameAbove has championed the dedication of a statue in Gervin's likeness to honor his rich legacy. The sculpture will stand outside the George Gervin GameAbove Center. An unveiling ceremony is scheduled for August 2023.

Eastern Michigan sophomore Emoni Bates, a former top-five recruit, announced on Monday that he had declared for the 2023 NBA draft ahead of the early entry deadline. Bates was named to the All-MAC third team after averaging 19.2 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists on 33% shooting from 3-point range. He finished third in the conference in scoring and had the ninth-highest-scoring game in the country when he produced 43 points on Jan. 24.

Wrapping up this interview in an arena that will soon bear his name, Gervin thinks on it all for a second. What if he had gone to a different school? What if he’d played at Long Beach State? What if all those dominoes didn’t fall in order for him to land at EMU as an outsized star at the unlikeliest place? What if he never played in the 1972 NCAA College Division national semifinals? Gervin lets out a sort of half-laugh. He says, “You know, I really think I became the Iceman from that controversy. I learned to control my emotions. Think about it. And guess where I was? At Eastern Michigan University.”
George Gervin received one of the highest honors for an athlete on Saturday. Eastern Michigan University announced it would rename its basketball arena after the former EMU star and NBA Hall of Famer nicknamed “The Iceman” during halftime of the men’s basketball game against Florida International. EMU defeated FIU 92-88 in overtime.
Thanks to a donation from GameAbove, a group of Eastern Michigan alumni, EMU’s arena will be named the George Gervin GameAbove Center. EMU’s arena was previously named the Convocation Center for the past 24 years.
One of the most recognizable Eastern Michigan athletes will be back in Ypsilanti next weekend. Former EMU basketball legend and NBA Hall of Famer George “The Iceman” Gervin will be honored at halftime of the Eagles’ men’s basketball game against Florida International on Saturday, Nov. 11.
Pistons general manager Troy Weaver is rounding out his staff with new appointments announced Monday. The Pistons added Britta Brown as the senior director of basketball administration and will manage day-to-day team operations and logistics. Brown previously was an assistant athletic director at Eastern Michigan University and played lacrosse at the University of North Carolina.

Mike Vorkunov: Knicks worked out Hofstra guard Justin Wright-Foreman, Eastern Michigan big man James Thompson IV, and North Carolina A&T wing Terry Harris today, according to league sources. Wright-Foreman averaged 27.1 ppg this year. Harris shot 41% from 3, and is Tobias Harris' brother.
The Jackson College men's basketball team will head in a new direction this coming season. Former NBA player and Eastern Michigan University assistant basketball coach Carl Thomas will take over as head coach for the men's basketball program. Thomas assumes the coaching reins from John Willis, who resigned after being involved with the program since its revival in 2006-07. Willis was an assistant coach before becoming head coach midway through the 2011 season.
Now, with Marc J. Spears tweeting that Greene's going to work out for NBA teams at Eastern Michigan University Sunday, the Nets are not among those interested in signing him for the rest of the season or even offering him a 10-day contract. According to a league source, "the Nets right now are not interested." The Nets have an open roster spot.
