When Michael Jordan sold his majority stake in the Charlotte Hornets in 2023, the NBA no longer had any African American majority franchise owners. But with the announcement of former MLB star Alex Rodriguez becoming a co-owner of the Minnesota Timberwolves, he says Black and Hispanic ownership is now a part of the NBA. “I’m hoping that the trend continues,” Rodriguez said to Andscape following an introductory news conference at the Thomas & Mack Center on July 11. “But as far as being someone with Black and Brown skin, I’m representing a lot of good people out there. Give credit to [NBA commissioner] Adam Silver, who championed this transaction. I’m grateful for that.”
If anyone is wondering how the veteran guard feels less than a month after being dealt to the Charlotte Hornets from the Utah Jazz, the bouncy nature of Sexton’s steps is a dead giveaway. And that’s just on the exterior. Inside, it’s downright obvious he’s nearly ready to burst. “Super excited,” Sexton said during a chat with The Observer. “Super grateful for the opportunity. Ready to come in and help build the culture, and just be a leader right away. I feel like the last couple of weeks practicing and stuff, it’s been a lot of fun but also getting used to the guys.”
But like every athlete facing a major decision, the choice is rarely simple. PG-13 himself pointed to two key factors that carry real weight: the city and the culture surrounding the team. On both fronts, the Hornets present a tough call — one George said he'd rather stay away from. "Listen, if I'm in free agency, I'm not picking Charlotte just because there's no winning culture there," the 76er emphasized. "Charlotte is an amazing city. Would love to play for it, because of the city — like, I can see myself living there. But in terms of a basketball standpoint, I'm not going. My career is over if I go there."

Which NBA shooters did you grow up admiring? Kon Knueppel: “Ray Allen. I don’t shoot really anything like him. But he was one of my favorite players just because he could shoot the hell out of it. He was one of my favorites.”

You’re also known as a complete player. What went into building those habits? Kon Knueppel: “I used to not be able to shoot. I was a bad shooter. So in between my mid-range game, I was a playmaker. That was kind of my game. Shooting was the piece that I added on at the end. Obviously, now it kind of flipped a little bit because that’s valued so much more now. That’s kind of how that came to be.” Obviously, you and Cooper had such a great connection at Duke. What’s it going to be like now matching up against him? Knueppel: “It’ll be super fun. He’s going to have a whole lot of success. I’m super happy for him. It’ll be fun.”
