Coty M. Davis: #Pistons legend Isiah Thomas speaks at Rev. Jesse Jackson’s funeral service in Chicago.
As a 1990s Bulls diehard, I have despised this man since I was 8 years old.

But I cried along with Isaiah Thomas today because he was so poignant and so heartfelt. And so real.

Some of Isiah Thomas' earliest memories are of he and his family protesting systemic racism. Thomas' mother, Mary Thomas, was an activist on Chicago's West Side, working with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rev. Jesse Jackson and Black Panther chairman Fred Hampton. So the entire Thomas family was active in protests and demonstrations against inequality in Chicago. "Activism was the family business. We did not have babysitters. So every protest, march, rally, riot, mom was like, 'Alright ya'll, let's go,'" Thomas says. "So we went everywhere (to join protests) together as a family."

The Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. said the public owes LeBron James a "debt of gratitude and thanks" for the Cavaliers superstar's "graciousness in the face of adversity" with his response Wednesday to his Los Angeles home being vandalized with a racial slur spray painted on the front gates.

"He has built a level of responsibility for superstars that is a model for this generation of athletes," said Jackson, the veteran civil rights leader, in an interview with cleveland.com. He is attending Game 1 of the Finals Thursday between the Cavs and Warriors. "Very few athletes invest in the cause of social justice," Jackson continued. "Dr. (Martin Luther) King would be so proud of him. LeBron's sense of dignity defies the odds."

But the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who visited Odom at the hospital Wednesday, said doctors believe he is recovering after being totally unresponsive Tuesday. “Apparently from what the doctor said, he was much better off today than yesterday. He at least has some responsiveness now,” Jackson said. “He’s got tubes in him now but we felt inspired by his presence. We’re just holding hands and hoping he can bounce back.”

Dick Vitale whispers louder than Andre Miller screams. But in the pregame locker room, the Nuggets' veteran guard delivered a powerful, passionate speech, channeling the oration of, say, Jesse Jackson, who just happened to be at Tuesday night's Nuggets-Thunder game. "One amazing speech — guys were just amped up, ready to play," Denver forward Kenneth Faried said after the Nuggets' 114-104 win, Denver's 13th consecutive, a franchise-NBA record. "He said it doesn't matter that we're coming off a back-to-back, it doesn't matter that we went to overtime — we're going to play this game hard and with pride. We don't have any excuses. Andre Miller is a guy who doesn't really say much, but when he talks, everybody listens, nobody's playing around. "Everybody locks in."
