Several familiar names were included in USA Basketball’s latest announcement: the 2024 Select Team, which is tasked with practicing against the National Team to prepare them for Olympic competition. First, Pacers assistant coach Jim Boylen and Purdue head coach Matt Painter are the two assistants who round out the staff leading this group, headed up by Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley.

Purdue center and likely back-to-back national player of the year Zach Edey won’t be back at Purdue next season, head coach Matt Painter told ZAGSBLOG. “He was never coming back,” Painter said. The 7-foot-4 Edey is currently projected as the No. 13 pick in this year’s draft, per ESPN.com.

Tony East: Pacers assistant coach Jim Boylen will serve as an assistant coach for the Team USA select team. Purdue's Matt Painter will be an assistant as well. Boylen was the coach of the World Cup qualifying team from 2021-2023.

If the NBA reaches a labor agreement, Cardinal likely will re-sign with the Mavericks for what would be left of the 2011-12 season. If not, he would love to help his alma mater. Cardinal has had unofficial, preliminary discussions with athletic director Morgan Burke and other Purdue officials. Basketball coach Matt Painter discussed one of his assistant coaching vacancies in the spring with Cardinal, who was in the NBA playoffs at the time. "That's just part of the process while we are working our way through this . . . talking with Morgan and talking with Matt and (associate athletic director) Nancy Cross," said Cardinal, who was the featured guest at Wednesday night's Covington Classic Coaches vs. Cancer fundraising dinner at the Beef House Restaurant.

Not that Purdue struggled mightily without the services of Hummel, who watched from the sidelines as Moore helped lead the program to back-to-back 25 win seasons and three NCAA Tournament wins in his final two years. “I think he probably reflects back now and wishes we had a little more luck in that area, but certainly not while it was happening,” says Purdue head coach Matt Painter. “I think he was able to make the most of it and I think it helped him in the long run, dealing with that kind of adversity and being held accountable for the extra slack that needed to be picked up.”
