Police say they stopped former Purdue basketball star Zach Edey on May 1 driving 101 mph in a 55-mph zone on Indiana 25 in southern Tippecanoe County. Edey's northbound Kia Sorento passed the Indiana State Police trooper's southbound vehicle at 7:03 p.m., according to a probable cause affidavit. When the trooper caught up to the speeding car, Edey turned eastbound on Tippecanoe County Road 700 South and stopped. Edey has an initial hearing at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Tippecanoe Superior 6 on a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving.
Duke's Cooper Flagg on Saturday became just the fourth freshman to win the Wooden Award as the most outstanding men's college basketball player. Flagg edged Auburn's Johni Broome, while Florida's Walter Clayton Jr., Alabama's Mark Sears and Purdue's Braden Smith were the other finalists. Flagg had been considered the favorite for the award during the second half of the season, when he emerged as the most consistently dominant player in the sport in leading Duke to the ACC regular-season and conference tournament championships and the program's first Final Four appearance since Mike Krzyzewski retired. He won both ACC Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year and is the clear-cut leader to be selected No. 1 in June's NBA draft.

With a roster featuring the two most iconic stars of this era — LeBron James and Stephen Curry — the USA men’s basketball team attracted its biggest exhibition audience in 12 years. Wednesday’s United States-Canada USA Basketball Showcase exhibition game averaged 1.16 million viewers on FS1, marking the largest basketball audience ever on the network — surpassing a Purdue-Indiana men’s college basketball game two years ago (954K) — and the most-watched USA Basketball exhibition since 2012, when the games aired on the ESPN networks and viewership topped out at 2.72 million.
Several familiar names were included in USA Basketball’s latest announcement: the 2024 Select Team, which is tasked with practicing against the National Team to prepare them for Olympic competition. First, Pacers assistant coach Jim Boylen and Purdue head coach Matt Painter are the two assistants who round out the staff leading this group, headed up by Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley.

Purdue center and likely back-to-back national player of the year Zach Edey won’t be back at Purdue next season, head coach Matt Painter told ZAGSBLOG. “He was never coming back,” Painter said. The 7-foot-4 Edey is currently projected as the No. 13 pick in this year’s draft, per ESPN.com.
Powell is still around, but Olynyk is here this time, as is reigning national collegiate player of the year, 7-foot-4 Zach Edey of Purdue. Edey, in particular, could fill a break-in-case-of-emergency role. Both have challenges, with Olynyk being a bit more perimeter-oriented and Edey lacking experience, but there is more of a baseline of raw size Canada has had recently. Their ability to hold up inside is still unknown. Canada’s 3-point shooting also is a concern. However, the notion that Canada might be bullied and outfoxed — as the team was in losing to Venezuela in a qualification tournament in 2015 — is now far-fetched. “There (are) no soft players here,” Canadian coach Jordi Fernández said. “I’m pretty sure they’ll make sure everybody sees that.”
A Marion County Superior court has issued a permanent injunction for the home of a former Purdue and NBA basketball players’ Geist home. The owner of the home is former Maverick A.J. Hammons. He’s accused of allowing tenants to host parties at the home, many associated with violence.
Tony East: Pacers assistant coach Jim Boylen will serve as an assistant coach for the Team USA select team. Purdue's Matt Painter will be an assistant as well. Boylen was the coach of the World Cup qualifying team from 2021-2023.
