David Pober grew up in Pittsburgh, became an insurance agent and somehow became intertwined with Pittsburgh basketball royalty and some NBA players. Pober started the Summer Pro Classic in 1977, and it drew 10,404 fans. He ran the event and got NBA players from all over to participate. He had four more All-Star games at the Civic Arena before folding the event after 1984. Pober, an Oakland resident, died Monday at UPMC Presbytertian-Shadyside. He was 74.
Five times over an eight-year period the Pittsburgh Summer Pro Classic was played at the old Civic Arena. Future Naismith Basketball Hall of Famers known as Dr. J, Moses, Hawk and Dominique played in the event, as well as many other NBA standouts, some with Pittsburgh ties. And the man responsible for the event was known simply as “Chopper.”

It's been intentional to create a CBA that allows more teams to compete." — NBA Commissioner Adam Silver on Thunder vs. Pacers in the #NBAFinals

TJ McConnell: Cam Johnson’s my guy. I love that dude. But to say I was the Michael Jordan of Pittsburgh it's egregious. It's probably the most egregious stand I've ever made in my life. It's ridiculous. I had a really good high school career and I shot the ball a bunch. I had the ultimate green light. I had great teammates who just kept passing it to me and my dad was my coach who just pushed me to get where I'm at today. Going Division I at Duquesne and Arizona even I slowly started to transition to know that um I'm going to be a point guard. I was more of a shooting guard in high school and shot a ton of threes.
