Klay Thompson will join Dirk Nowitzki and other former Dallas Mavericks in a celebrity tennis match on Saturday. Thompson will make his second public appearance as a Dallas Maverick since his introductory press conference at the Dirk Nowitzki Foundation Tennis Classic. Thompson won't be the only star there. He'll be joined by Mavs legends: two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash and 2011 champion J.J. Barea.

Jose Juan Barea takes head coaching job in Puerto Rico


Shams Charania: 14-year NBA veteran and 2011 champion JJ Barea is becoming the head coach of the Guaynabo Mets in the Puerto Rican Professional Basketball League, per sources. Barea enters coaching side for first time in his native Puerto Rico.

Jose Juan Barea wants to coach in the NBA


On Tuesday, Barea told Mavs.com that he has a strong interest in becoming an NBA coach, starting with being on the staff of any one of the league’s 30 teams. But if he had his druthers, Barea said he would prefer to start his coaching journey as an assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks. “Everybody that knows me know that my first option will always be with the Mavs,” Barea said. “I would love to be with the Mavs. “But if that don’t work out, then I’ve got to look for another option and see what I can do. But my first option is to be with the Mavs.”

J.J. Barea was inducted into the Northeastern Athletics Hall of Fame Thursday. Barea, regarded as one of the best athletes in school history, said his time on campus (2002-06) was instrumental in helping him blossom into an NBA champion with the Dallas Mavericks.

“I came as a 150-pound kid from Puerto Rico,” Barea said. “I left four years later, 175 pounds and ready to take on the world.” The 5-10 guard said his advice for younger players is to focus on maximizing college and not worry about making the NBA. Jose Juan Barea’s career as a professional athlete ended in the way that many never imagined: on the bench. Due to an injury to his left leg, the veteran point guard of the Cangrejeros de Santurce could not be on the court in the sixth game of the Basketball Superior Nacional (BSN) quarterfinal series against the Atleticos de San Gernan and from bank suffered the elimination of his team by falling by a score of 100-84.

Hotelier and businessman Ricky Newman and NBA star José Juan Barea have teamed up to build a $7 million multi-sport complex with lodging located at the former facilities of the Nuestra Señora de la Merced school in Hato Rey, they announced. The sports development complex called JUMP Sports Development Center is a multi-use facility consisting of indoor and outdoor spaces. The project that spans five acres of land, will provide “exceptional and high caliber sports training while endorsing sports tourism in Puerto Rico.”
