Jorge Sierra: Shortest NBA champions in the last 20 years: Jose Juan Barea 🇵🇷 Jose Alvarado 🇵🇷 Kyle Lowry, Fred Van Vleet,

Which veterans gave you the most guidance? VJ Edgecombe: Kyle Lowry, Eric Gordon before he got traded, PG, those three. They were the vets on the team. I ask a ton of questions. I'm the person who asks a ton of questions, 'cause I just wanna get better as a player and as a person. When it comes to financials or off the court or just buying stuff, housing, on the court, how to keep my body right. Like, what do you do? Like, what's your routine? Like, how do you find your routines? Just stuff like that. So I would say those three help me a lot.

While athletes in tennis and even the NFL have double dipped in broadcasting and playing, the trend of active player contributors continues to gain steam in professional basketball. NBA players Kyle Lowry and Tyrese Haliburton joined Prime Video as athlete contributors. On the WNBA side, Kelsey Plum signed on as a player contributor for Prime, Sophie Cunningham is working as a studio analyst for USA Network and Caitlin Clark made multiple appearances on NBC’s studio show for NBA games.

“I think it’s becoming more attractive because it gives players the opportunity to show the other side of their brains and not just a basketball playing side,” Lowry said. “It’s a lot that goes into being a professional athlete, especially a basketball player. You have to continue to play basketball, working (on) your craft, but you also gotta watch the film, study it, etc. Also having to explain what you’re doing, how you are preparing yourself to the everyday fan is fun.”

Anunoby, despite being robbed of an opportunity that some players 15 years his senior never got to experience, remembers that time fondly. He looks back and reflects on all that he learned from his teammates about how to be a pro, how to prepare at the sport’s highest level. The players on that team were so influential on who Anunoby is today that he wanted to list the entire roster, as many as he could recall while put on the spot, to show appreciation for what that experience meant to him as he sat on the sideline and they went to fight on his behalf. “Jeremy Lin was a great teammate,” Anunoby said. “I had Jodie Meeks, Norm Powell, Fred VanVleet, Marc Gasol, Serge Ibaka, Kyle Lowry, Kawhi Leonard, Pascal Siakam and Danny Green. I learned a lot from those guys. I learned so much being out.”

Fred VanVllet: “It was between Toronto and Indiana that summer. Indiana wanted me to play Orlando Summer League and Vegas Summer League, but I ain’t feel like doing that. So, Toronto said, ‘They got $50,000. You come to Summer League. If you get the 50, if you don’t make the team — if you make the team, we’ll get you a two-year deal.’ I’m like, ‘All right, bet. Boom. Let’s get it.’ And that was it. And I was in Toronto like the next day. Kyle Lowry and — Kyle was there. Cory Joseph and Delon Wright. That was the three. And so when I go to Summer League, Delon Wright tear his shoulder at Summer League. So boom, now I move up. Now I’m the third point guard. And s***, I just worked from there. I was in. That’s all I needed.”

A few years ago Kyle Lowry told reporters he would never accept a role as a bench warmer or an unofficial coach just to reach his 20th NBA season. Well, allegedly. “Really?” said Lowry, cursing for emphasis. “I lied.”

Kyle Lowry on what it will mean to have his jersey retired in Toronto: “Y'all ever see me cry?… If it does & when it does, it will be a super emotional day. I put a lot of blood, sweat & tears in that 7." He also restated his plan to sign a one-day contract to retire a Raptor.

Josh Lewenberg: Does Nick Nurse think that Kyle Lowry is a future Hall of Famer? “Yep, no doubt. No doubt.”

Josh Lewenberg: Nick Nurse on the possibility of getting Lowry (who’s only played in 5 games this season) on the floor in this back-to-back vs the Raptors: “Let’s see if we can throw him in these next few days.” He says he’ll talk to Kyle about it before the game and see how he’s feeling.
