Jon Rothstein: NC State's Jerry Deng tells me that he has officially withdrawn from the 2025 NBA Draft and will return to school next season. Transfer from Florida State who averaged 7.0 PPG last year.
Washburn’s collegiate days were as electric as they were turbulent. A high school phenom, he joined a stacked NC State squad that included Vinny Del Negro, Nate McMillan, Lorenzo Charles and Spud Webb.“I played with Spud my freshman year… during those 10 games we went 10-0,” said Washburn. “I got suspended for those little stereo pranks that I did and then they lost the next 7 games,” Washburn recalls. “Fast forward to my sophomore year, now we have Nate at the point guard, we have Vinny at the 2… me and Shackleford were the same size, so a lot of times he would guard the center and I would guard the forward… I really never watched sports on tv, I never knew how loaded we really were
He left NC State without ever truly seeing the ceiling of what he and that Wolfpack team would have achieved. The NBA came calling soon after, and the Golden State Warriors made him the third overall pick in 1986. But the glamour of the pros quickly gave way to something darker. “The lifestyle was kind of fast for me,” Washburn admits of San Francisco. “The NBA gave me a kind of security blanket to go through the projects and through the ‘hood… I was already starting to experiment with drugs… I was really setting the stage for myself to start finding a place to go out and get drugs.” Even before his first NBA paycheck, Washburn says he was at rock bottom. “When I walked those NBA doors,’ he recounted. “Because I mean, before I had an NBA dollar I was at my lowest. All the NBA did was give me more money to dig in deeper… The NBA just gave me an opportunity to keep burying myself.”
Former NBA player and NC State standout Chucky Brown has filed a lawsuit against Saint Augustine’s University, an HBCU located in Raleigh, North Carolina, alleging breach of contract after he was terminated without full payment of his salary. Brown, who spent over a decade in the NBA and later transitioned into coaching, was hired by Saint Augustine’s in 2022 to lead the men’s basketball program under a three-year contract.

With the NCAA men’s basketball transfer portal window open through April 22, the Oklahoma City Thunder have lost multiple scouts to college general manager jobs. Thunder amateur scout Corey Evans is expected to be named general manager of the University of Cincinnati Bearcats, league sources told HoopsHype. Before joining Oklahoma City, Evans was a national recruiting analyst for Rivals. Thunder scout Andrew Slater has also left Oklahoma City to take the general manager job at NC State after making a name for himself as a recruiting analyst at the high school level.
During the recruiting process, Kelly and Ralph made one thing clear to Scheyer above all else: no special treatment. So when Flagg was noticeably passive early in a game against NC State, Scheyer let it rip in one of Duke’s first timeouts. “Told him he’s being soft,” Scheyer says. “I used some different language, some different words.” Leaving the huddle, Scheyer looked up and happened to make eye contact with Kelly — who was standing a few rows behind her son, nodding in agreement with Scheyer’s assessment. Flagg subsequently scored 23 of his game-high 28 points in the second half — erasing a 13-point deficit, Duke’s second-largest this season.
Kwame Brown: "This is the travesty that people are not realizing. They’re acting like the 55th pick ain’t nothing. But don’t you think the kid from NC State, who is a proven double-double monster, could have been a project? Lose a little weight — this kid is a monster. What’s his name, the center for NC State? DJ Burns. How can you make a case for Bronny James, a guy that had a heart issue, that hadn’t proven anything, against a guy that went to a good school and put up numbers against everybody?"
McMillan, an NC State legend and NBA veteran who grew up in a single-parent household himself, is committed to bridging the gap for these young men. "I wanted to be involved in providing programs like this because I believe there's a lack of resources available to our kids," he said. "While many people are working to make a difference, sometimes parents don't know where to turn." The foundation's motto, "Dream, Commit, Do," reflects its mission to inspire and support these boys.
Jon Chepkevich: NC State’s Mohamed Diarra has agreed to join the Los Angeles Lakers for NBA Summer League, I’m told. The 6’10” French big man is a hellacious rebounder, plays with great energy, and really stepped up his game in March to help fuel the Wolfpack’s ACC + NCAA Tournament runs.
