Justin Russo: Random factoid: Trey Murphy III is 3 dunks away from being the third player this season to log at least 100 dunks and 100 made 3s. The two who have done it so far are Victor Wembanyama and OG Anunoby. Murphy would be the only player this season to get to 100 dunks and 200 3s.

The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) held its annual Board of Player Representatives Winter Meeting earlier today, electing Santi Aldama and Trey Murphy III as the newest Vice Presidents on its Executive Committee. Effective immediately, they will take over for Jaren Jackson Jr. and Donovan Mitchell, whose three-year terms have concluded. As part of the NBPA Executive Committee, Aldama and Murphy will help spearhead strategic planning, business affairs and key initiatives to carry out the NBPA’s work on behalf of all players. “I am excited to join the Executive Committee and get to work on the issues that impact NBA players daily,” said Santi Aldama. “My goal is to ensure every player feels supported and that we keep building on the strength and unity of this brotherhood.”

“Stepping into this role is a great opportunity to support the players and set up the next generation for success,” said Trey Murphy III. “I look forward to learning from the other guys in the room and contributing to the continued growth of our union.” Murphy has risen from the 17th overall pick in the 2021 Draft to become a dynamic starter for the New Orleans Pelicans. The five-year veteran is deeply invested in empowering his Durham, North Carolina community, actively organizing free resources and training for local families through his annual Basketball Skills Development Clinic and Back-to-School Community Bash.

Trey Murphy: “I got the same approach every day: is get better and play my game. At some point, it’ll be recognized that I’m one of the better shooters in the league. Until then, it is what it is. Gonna keep working on my game. Gonna keep shooting the ball like I have been. Me not being in the 3-point contest isn’t gonna ruin my day, but it is something that I definitely saw and wasn’t the biggest fan of.”

Some rival executives are hearing that the Lakers remain willing to move their 2031 or 2032 first-round pick for the right wing. The problem is, that player doesn’t appear to be available, at least at that price point. The Lakers had conversations with New Orleans earlier this season about Herbert Jones and were told the Pelicans intended to keep him. The price for Trey Murphy III, another favorite of some in the Lakers’ organization, was even higher.

Teams have probed the Pelicans on the availability of Trey Murphy III, but New Orleans’s asking price has been high. Chicago has fielded calls on Coby White, sources say. Boston could off-load Chris Boucher in a salary dump.

Still, sources around the league have said the message they get from the Pelicans is they believe they have a playoff roster they just need the right combination of coaching and development to unlock it. What bums me out about this is that Herb Jones and Trey Murphy would be phenomenal on a lot of teams. If you add Murphy to Detroit and pair him with Cade and Ausar, you have a devastating 1-2-3 combo of defense and shooting. If you move Herb Jones to the Lakers, LA starts to look a lot more legit.
