In all, seven NBA players went down with a ruptured Achilles this past year, the others being James Wiseman, Isaiah Jackson, Dejounte Murray and Dru Smith during the regular season. At this week’s summer league, a plethora of orthopedic companies have arrived to weigh in with opinions and training proposals designed to explain or prevent the injuries. “Feels like there must be a thousand of performance people here, I guess selling their wares,” said one NBA team executive. “But [the Achilles epidemic] is something. There’s no way it’s not something. We’re looking at how people are playing, what the jump-back moves mean, how fast the game is. “Everything [injury-wise] in basketball is below the waist, and when someone gets a sore calf, I think the number one thing you’ll see is people will not ... play. It doesn’t matter if they get cleared medically. They will say, ‘I’m not 100% so there’s no way I’m doing it.’ It was starting to happen over the last year, but I think with what’s gone on is that any player who doesn’t feel 100% in the calves, or in their calf, is not going to play. That would be my bet.”

The NBA had already convened a panel of experts to study Achilles tendon injuries even before Indiana star Tyrese Haliburton ruptured his in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, Commissioner Adam Silver said Wednesday night. The league had seven known Achilles injuries this season - Pacers forwards James Wiseman and Isaiah Jackson, New Orleans guard Dejounte Murray and Miami guard Dru Smith had them in the regular season, and Boston's Jayson Tatum, Milwaukee's Damian Lillard and Haliburton were hurt in the playoffs. Silver, speaking to ESPN as part of its NBA draft coverage, said there weren't any in the NBA in the previous season. "We had already convened a panel of experts before Tyrese's most recent Achilles rupture," Silver said on the telecast. "We had seven this year. We had zero last year under the exact same circumstances. The most we've ever had in a season is four."
Scott Agness: Tyrese Haliburton plans to undergo surgery later today to repair his torn right Achilles tendon suffered in Game 7 loss. It will be performed by Dr. Martin O’Malley at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. He also treated Sumner, Wiseman, and Jackson.
A Manhattan jury in October convicted Calvin Darden Jr. of cheating Howard -- who had been one of the NBA's most dominant players in his prime -- out of $7 million in a bogus scheme to buy the WNBA's Atlanta Dream. The 50-year-old Atlanta resident was also found guilty of bilking $1 million from former NBA forward Chandler Parsons in a separate ruse involving the development of then-NBA prospect James Wiseman.

Other NBA players are openly pro-cat. Miami Heat rookie Kel’el Ware has one. Indiana Pacers big men Myles Turner (who even styles himself in cat shirts) and James Wiseman do as well. Also, Utah Jazz wing Keyonte George: “Elite, elite basketball player. Extremely skillful,” Poole says. “He’s also a cat dad.” “There are a lot of people in the league, I think, who have pets and have cats. It’s just, you know, I don’t think we go out of our way to express the fact that we have cats,” Poole says. “It’s sort of a cool community. Like a cool cat community. We just kind of keep it in-house. You’ve got to knock a couple times for us to let you in. Secret code.”
Ian Begley: With regard the MIA-IND trade reported by ESPN that includes Thomas Bryant, IND big man James Wiseman had been included in discussions of this potential deal, per league sources.
Bobby Marks: The Indiana Pacers have been granted a $2.2M and $1.2M Disabled Player Exception, sources tell ESPN. The exceptions were for the season ending injuries of Isaiah Jackson and James Wiseman. The deadline to use the exception is March 10.
Dustin Dopirak: Ben Sheppard and Jarace Walker listed as questionable on the Pacers' injury report for tomorrow's game against Milwaukee. Myles Turner no longer on the list. Aaron Nesmith and Andrew Nembhard (and of course Isaiah Jackson and James Wiseman) still out.
