In the wake of Dallas moving on from Jason Kidd, there have been rumblings of both Duke's Jon Scheyer and Michigan's Dusty May being linked to the vacancy. But ever since Masai Ujiri was hired to run basketball operations last month, the belief around the league is that the most likely outcome for Dallas is elevating one of the NBA's rising assistants. That's what Ujiri did the other two times he hired a coach, both with the Toronto Raptors: In 2018, he replaced Dwane Casey with Nick Nurse. In 2023, he replaced Nurse with Darko Rajakovic.

Ultimately, whoever is hired will have to work with head coach Nick Nurse, who was retained. Nurse has two years left on his contract, league sources told HoopsHype. In addition, Bob Myers is expected to be involved in all major transactional decisions for the 76ers moving forward, even after a new basketball operations leader is hired.

Ky Carlin: Josh Harris on the job Nick Nurse has done so far: “Look, I think Nick had the team played hard, and there were a lot of things that happened. I think we all saw where there were various rosters that were available and rosters that weren't available.” #Sixers

Shams Charania: Head coach Nick Nurse will continue in his role into a fourth season with the 76ers, sources tell ESPN. Four-time NBA championship architect Bob Myers, the president of sports for Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, will be tasked to lead the search for the new head executive for the 76ers and he will oversee the franchise's basketball department in the interim.

That leaves the franchise facing uncomfortable questions and potentially major decisions. The jobs of Morey and head coach Nick Nurse are expected to be evaluated entering the offseason, multiple league sources told The Athletic. As of Sunday’s elimination, team sources said ownership has not made final decisions on either and is likely to take a few days to assess before making any major calls.

Derek Bodner: Nick Nurse, on VJ Edgecombe's rookie season: "That was a hell of an impressive rookie season. He's a hell of a player. It's not about shooting, scoring, jumping, all that stuff. He really knows how to play. He really has a leadership quality to him. I think he's a bigtime winner."

Derek Bodner: Nick Nurse, on Joel Embiid: "He worked his ass off to get out there and play. I think it was really difficult for him, especially [in Game 3]. He gave us everything he could. I commend him."

Derek Bodner: Nick Nurse, on New York's open 3s: "I think we came out ready to go, we executed well on the offensive end and shots didn't do in, and it bothered our guys. We just couldn't get over that. I think that dispirited them at the start."
Karl-Anthony Towns knows what Nick Nurse is going through. He has dealt with personal loss, and he understands how difficult it is to balance grief with the job. “I really wanted to give my condolences to him, I haven’t been able to talk to him personally, but I know it’s really tough,” Towns said unprompted Saturday. “I don’t know what he’s going through [exactly], but in a similar fashion I know how it is to have to show up to work and to have a lot of pressure on you to do something special when you’re kind of not fully there.”

A series in which Philadelphia thought it had a puncher’s chance has come down to an attempt to delay what looks inevitable. Sunday afternoon, the 76ers will try to extend an up-and-down season. They’ll try to avoid the embarrassment of a sweep. And speaking of embarrassing, Knicks fans once again took over Xfinity Mobile Arena and made it a difficult environment for the home team. “We’re in a situation where we have to go out there and get the next one and see what happens,” Sixers coach Nick Nurse said. “If you get one, it gets to 3-1, and then a series can turn pretty quickly. But we’re going to have to dig in and do some things better. We started out tonight playing great. But we had a bad stretch of defensive rebounding, and we gave up direct line drives. We just didn’t score enough. We didn’t keep the scoreboard moving.”

Ian Begley: Nick Nurse said Joel Embiid is “getting better all the time” and “I think he’s gonna give it a shot here, but we’ll see.” Embiid is still questionable for Game 3 at this point. Nurse intimated that Embiid was going to get checked again before final decision is made

Knicks Videos: "I thought we had maybe four wide open shots in a row that didn't go. We needed to keep the scoreboard moving. We played great offense, we just didn't shot make." Nick Nurse talks about the importance of turnovers in tonight's game and how the 76ers played offensively:
