The Grizzlies also dipped into the free agency pool, adding Ty Jerome. That is a move that Morant also approved of. "Definitely another solid guard for us," Morant said. "Everybody seen what he done for a great Cleveland team this year. I honestly felt like he was a big piece of that team. To have him, we adding another ball handler that cannot only create for himself but for everybody else."

There was a growing anticipation as 6 PM ET approached that Memphis is indeed poised to secure a commitment from the in-demand Ty Jerome. The ultimate price point for such a deal remains critical to the Grizzlies' other offseason goals: Completing a renegotiation-and-extension with Jaren Jackson Jr. Jr. and maintaining sufficient flexibility to match offers to restricted free agent Santi Aldama.

And we can sit here and debate whether Kenny was right to do that, whether he should have trusted Tai a little bit more, whether Tai earned a longer leash. But there were people inside the organization that saw the defensive numbers of Ty Jerome in that series against Indiana, and they were terrified. They were terrified about what that could look like moving into the future. And I think there was some hesitancy to make that kind of financial commitment to somebody when you're legitimately wondering, ‘How much can we trust him in a playoff series or in a playoff run?

Charlotte and Memphis are two teams that keep coming up as likely suitors for Ty Jerome, who is now regarded as a lock to leave Cleveland to find the deal he is known to be seeking that starts at (or at worst adjacent) to the full $14.1 million midlevel exception.

The Utah Jazz have emerged as a team to watch in free agency as guard Ty Jerome hits the open market following a career-best season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, league sources told RG. Jerome averaged 12.5 points, 3.4 assists and shot 51.6% from the field in 70 games last season for Cleveland, including over 40% shooting from beyond the arc. He also played well in the postseason, averaging 11.7 points and 3.6 assists on 50% shooting, including 46.7% from three.

Zach Lowe: “The Clippers—just watch the Clippers. That’s all I’m saying. They’re going to have the full mid-level exception. They have a lot of tradable contracts. They have some picks back in the quiver—the trade quiver. I think they could use a player like Ty Jerome. I like the idea of Ty Jerome on their team, particularly in the minutes when James Harden is on the bench. Oh, by the way—James Harden has a 30-something million dollar player option, 36 I think, for next year. Hmm. I think we’re probably going to hear some news on that one way or another in the next 48 hours. Safe money? Safe money: some sort of two-year deal, similar annual salary with the Clippers, given, again, the lack of cap space in this market. Just like everything else—until it’s signed, I don’t know. And I still think the Clippers are going to be aggressive. And I think Ty Jerome makes a lot of sense for them.”

Rival executives have speculated that Jerome could be …

Rival executives have speculated that Jerome could be in the $12-14 million range annually. Merrill might be looking at about $6-8 million annually. When it comes to the Cavaliers’ luxury tax bill, multiply those dollar figures by six. Suddenly, Jerome’s contract could cost the team $80 million when factoring in the tax. Merrill could cost more than $40 million. Is either player worth that? How would team executives justify it to Gilbert, especially when talking about two players further down the depth chart, neither of whom averaged more than 20 minutes?

From everything that I've heard the Cavs have had discussions about Dean Wade and do they want to see if they they can use him and something else to see if they can get assets back, different kinds of assets back, or different kinds of players back in return? So I think they're trying to figure out what is possible for us. And if we move off of Isaac Okoro’s money if we move off Dean Wade's money, does that make it easier to justify a Ty Jerome contract? Does that make it easier to justify a Sam Merrill contract?

Cavs hoping to get Ty Jerome to return for less than full midlevel exception

Cavs hoping to get Ty Jerome to return for less than full midlevel exception

The Cavs are wary of losing him and fellow key reserve free agent Sam Merrill, a shooting specialist who could have suitors as a fellow unrestricted free agent. Ty Jerome, who was on a $2.5 million deal this past season with the Cavaliers, is in line for a very hefty raise from that number, sources said. The expectation around the league is that it will take the full midlevel exception -- roughly $14.1 million -- to get Jerome signed. Cleveland, however, is hoping to get him to return for a bit less, sources said, as it attempts to navigate the second luxury tax apron and the team-building challenges that go along with it.
