You played for Monty Williams and Dwane Casey. What were they like as coaches? Killian Hayes: Very tactical, especially for Monty. I feel like his offensive arsenal was really deep coming in. Just being able to watch that and just seeing how deep his bag is offensively for sure. And Coach Casey, because I started with and just had a great relationship with Coach Casey.

In 2015, Detroit was deciding between Stanley Johnson and Devin Booker. It took the former. In 2018, the Pistons selected Henry Ellenson. He was out of the NBA by the age of 24. In 2017, Van Gundy and company decided to go with Luke Kennard over Donovan Mitchell. To put a cherry on top, the pick Detroit sent to the Clippers as part of the Griffin trade ended up being Miles Bridges, who was then traded to the Hornets for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Van Gundy was replaced as head coach in Detroit by then-reigning Coach of the Year Dwane Casey. Ed Stefeanski took over the Pistons’ front office as a buffer until the organization found its next lead decision-maker.

Demar DeRozan to younger teammates: Don't take what you have with Billy Donovan for granted

“I’ve played for Dwane Casey, he was coach of the year,” DeRozan said. “I played for Gregg Popovich, arguably one of the greatest coaches of all time, and playing for Billy, my personal opinion, he’s up there with those two guys just from the respect, the effort that you get from him. Even more so, he’s a guy you want to go out there and gain success, not just for yourself but for him, as well. “The love and respect that I have for Billy is right up there with what I had with the other two guys I mentioned. I’ve been lucky my entire career to have coaches like these guys. I tell a lot of the young players that you don’t really know what you have. To have such a great personable coach, hard-working coach in Billy, don’t ever take that for granted because it’s not always greener on the other side.”

Dwane Casey, the 2018 NBA Coach of the Year, credited Serbian basketball – and Serbian coaches in particular – as pioneers when it comes to training, practices and game preparation. “I would say that Serbian coaches were the first to use physical training, weight training, and today every team in the NBA does it,” Casey. who last coached the Detroit Pistons, said to Basketball Sphere. “It started at Partizan. They paid attention to measurements of body weight and body fat percentage. They used different types of training. That’s what I noticed in the Serbian coaching culture.”

Weaver spearheaded a search to replace former Pistons coach Dwane Casey over the last two months, which initially came down to three finalists without NBA coaching experience — New Orleans Pelicans assistant Jarron Collins, Milwaukee Bucks assistant Charles Lee and former Overtime Elite coach Kevin Ollie — but the organization desired an experienced voice to lead its young roster. “Monty represented the ideal prototype for our young team, but we didn’t expect him to be available,” Weaver said. “When he suddenly became available, we jumped at the opportunity to speak with him. That doesn’t mean the others in our process were not strong candidates. They were. But Monty is the prototype."

Pistons heavily pursuing Monty Williams to be next head coach

Nearly two months after Dwane Casey stepped down from his role as head coach, the Detroit Pistons are heavily pursuing Monty Williams, the NBA’s winningest coach since 2021, to be their next man in charge, league sources tell The Athletic. The Pistons are preparing to offer Williams in the range of $10 million per year, league sources said, which would put him among the league’s highest-paid coaches. Detroit has been hopeful over the past several weeks that Williams would consider accepting the job, sources added.
