The Norfolk native and former No. 1 NBA draft pick is bringing the Joe Smith Basketball Academy to Virginia Beach this summer. "This is where I'm from," Smith told 13News Now. "This is the [community] that raised me to become the person and the player that I became. So, I always wanted to make sure I came back... with a lot of the same people that I kind of grew up with, but now, with their kids."

After a year away, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame induction weekend returned to Virginia Beach, taking over the Westin on Saturday. Nine new members were added to the distinguished group of the best sports figures in the commonwealth. One of them was former Maury basketball great Joe Smith. He went on to become Naismith National Player of the Year at Maryland and was the number one overall draft pick in the 1995 NBA Draft. Smith played for 12 teams over a 16-year NBA career.
Smith reportedly lost over $61.2 million during his playing days. He joined former NBA All-Star host Dwight Howard on the Above The Rim with DH 12 podcast to break down his financial losses throughout his professional career. “It’s obviously broken down yearly first. I think the most I made was $6 million a year. So I was at $6 [million]. That was cut down to 3 [million] already. So after that $3 [million], you gotta pay agents. So, that’s 2% of that $6 [million] from that $3 [million] that’s being chopped in half. So that’s coming off the top, too. “With my deal, it took me almost three years to become a millionaire, and I was making $3 million a year because of all the taxes. So, it’s not like unless you got a major deal. If you got something like that, my rookie deal was three years, $9 million.”
Joe Smith: “My agent and I did three one-year deals to get my Bird rights with Minnesota. After that, I was going to sign a long-term deal. But halfway through that, my agents did an under-the-table deal without my knowledge. They worked out a deal with the owner where, at the end of the three years, I’d get six years, 86 million. But it came out in court, and I had nothing to do with it.”

Ex-NBA player Joe Smith is not a fan of his wife's latest business venture ... absolutely losing it after finding out she has an OnlyFans account. Smith's partner of five years, Kisha Chavis -- a former adult actress who went by the name Yasmine Pendavis -- shared footage of his reaction to discovering her XXX subscription-based profile ... and he was PISSED. Smith, who played for 12 different NBA teams over 17 seasons from 1995 to 2011, helped organize and host “Community Day” at Lakewood Park. The event provided free food, drink, entertainment and school supplies for more than 250 youngsters who stopped by.
