Kyrie Irving—you all had a conversation about the spotlight and the shoes you’re stepping into as the face of a franchise. What did he tell you? Cooper Flagg: I was driving home and he had texted me. He was like, “Yo, just give me a call.” He was like, “Listen, I understand. I’ve kind of been through this before. I don’t think there are a lot of people around you right now who can tell you they’ve been through something similar.” He was that top pick and was kind of thrown into the fire. So he just stepped in as a great vet for me and was there giving me guidance, because there were definitely times where I was shaken up. I’d never lost that much in my life. But just to hear him say that, and tell me that I’m doing everything I need to be doing, and just to stay with it and stay positive—it definitely helped me out a lot.

Fullcourtpass: Cooper Flagg reveals Kyrie Irving texted and called him earlier this season to support him during the Mavericks stretches of losses “He stepped in as like a great vet for me and was there giving me guidance because there were definitely times where I was shaken up. I'd never lost that much in my life. But just to hear him say that and tell me that I'm doing everything I need to be doing and just to stay with it and stay positive, it definitely helped me out a lot.” (via @ESPNNBA , h/t @NationMffl )
Theo Pinson: You were on two championship teams. Lakers and Cavs. Which team was better? We go head-to-head. Which team win? JR Smith: Cavs. Not even close. Pinson: Not close?! JR Smith: I say it's not close because like with Lakers we got an older Rajon Rondo, got obviously an older LeBron James, an older Anthony Davis… In Cleveland you had Kyrie Irving. First of all, K, nobody on that Lakers team checking him. Nobody. Kevin Love… (…) AD was definitely gonna cook, but T the way Double T (Tristan Thompson) play though, I don't know. I don't know. I can't say he was going to cook because Double T like he knows how to get off the f*cking skin though. Like he got that little dirty Canadian play.
Ex-Knicks coach David Fizdale says team brass told him to tank during the 2018-19 season to try to get Zion Williamson or Ja Morant, while assuring him that Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving were coming to the Knicks the following summer. The Knicks went 17-65 that season with a roster that featured Tim Hardaway Jr. and Enes Kanter. “The plan that we came up with, I was all in on that, and I was like this is the deal and this is the way to go about it. It just didn’t come to fruition,” Fizdale said in an interview with @RunItBackFDTV. “...Losing all them damn games, donating my record to get Zion Williamson or Ja.”

Meantime, Durant and Irving flirted with the Knicks before signing with the rival Nets in the summer of 2019. Their partnership their never led to a championship, and Irving is now with the Mavericks while Durant is in Houston. “That summer our people seem to have thought KD and Kyrie for sure was coming to us, that s--t didn’t work out,” Fizdale added.

Grant Afseth: Dallas Mavericks Injury Report vs. Orlando Magic: PROBABLE: Naji Marshall: Probable (Right Finger Contusion) Klay Thompson: Probable (Right Adductor Contusion) Brandon Williams: Probable (Left Quad Contusion) QUESTIONABLE: Cooper Flagg: Questionable (Left Midfoot Sprain) Moussa Cissé: Questionable (G League Two-Way) John Poulakidas: Questionable (G League Two-Way) Tyler Smith: Questionable (G League Two-Way) OUT: Marvin Bagley III: Out (Neck Sprain) Kyrie Irving: Out (Left Knee Surgery) Dereck Lively II: Out (Right Foot Surgery)

You being in Dallas, what was it like being there in the city with the Luka trade? What was it like seeing how the city responded to that trade, and what they’re going through this season? CV: Oh, it's unfortunate with what they're going through. Injuries played a factor, but we never got to see the plan or what it could potentially have to look like. I know the city was upset on that move, but that's something that happened and you kind of have to put it behind you and kind of look forward. I think the Mavs are in a great position. I know that this year, they're struggling a bit, but I think a lot has to do with the injuries that they have experienced. But the future is super bright. Cooper Flagg and Kyrie [Irving] coming back, so, I believe in this team and I think this team is gonna bounce back.

League sources say that Dallas is hopeful Kyrie Irving will return to a full-speed practice or two at some point during the final six weeks of the regular season even though Irving has been ruled out from playing in an actual game again before next season.
If Peterson were to be picked No. 1, he would be only the third such player since 2000 to have sat out more than 10 college games, behind only Kenyon Martin (17 over multiple seasons) and Kyrie Irving (26 in his lone injury-riddled season), per ESPN Research. In addition to the 11 games missed, midgame cramping has forced Peterson to the bench multiple times, where he has been seen using a massage gun. He said he wishes he could play more but didn't offer specifics regarding what is happening in those moments.
Mike Curtis: Asked Rick Carlisle about the value of elite PGs given the absence of Tyrese Haliburton & Kyrie Irving this season for both teams: "There's no substitute for playmakers. In Dallas, we had a lot of success over a 13-year period with Jason Kidd, (JJ) Barea & Devin Harris, who's sitting right here. It's just so important to have guys who can make plays & can score, but can also control the game. They can help a team play both fast & be able to work the game a little bit when necessary."

Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving will miss the remainder of the season as he continues to recover from knee surgery last March. Irving, who had the surgery last March to repair a torn left ACL, has not played this season. The nine-time All-Star is expected to return for the 2026-27 season. The Mavericks announced Wednesday that Irving is making "steady progress in rehabilitation and will remain actively engaged with the team through the remainder of the season."
