NBA Communications: San Antonio Spurs forward-center Victor Wembanyama and Detroit Pistons guard-forward Ausar Thompson have been named the Kia NBA Western and Eastern Conference Defensive Players of the Month, respectively, for games played in January.

After being cleared to play and registering 25 points, eight rebounds, five blocks and four steals against the Magic, Wembanyama said he didn’t think his latest bout of soreness was connected to his previous strain. “I don’t know that it’s related to my injury before,” Wembanyama said. “Out of caution, it’s almost like we’re going to consider it’s related.”

The double-team of an east coast snowstorm plus a mechanical failure with the team plane prevented the Spurs from arriving from Charlotte until 4 ½ hours before a rescheduled 8 p.m. tipoff Sunday at the Frost Bank Center. “It’s been a long-ass day,” Wembanyama said after the game. “I’ve been up since 6-something a.m. Charlotte time. It’s close to midnight now. … So a lot of caution in that report.”

Hornets upset Spurs 111-106 behind 26 points, eight rebounds from Brandon Miller, 21 points from Collin Sexton. Victor Wembanyama struggles, scoring 16 points on 15 field-goal attempts.

Tom Osborn: Victor Wembanyama to reporters today on the killing of two Minneapolis citizens by federal agents: "Every day I wake up and see the news and I'm horrified. I think it is crazy that some people make it sound like it's acceptable, like the murder of civilians is acceptable."

Ignoring what he said was an effort within the organization to keep his comments politically correct, Spurs star Victor Wembanyama forcefully condemned the recent killings of two Minnesota residents by federal agents. "Every day I wake up and see the news and I'm horrified," Wembanyama said. "I think it's crazy that some people make it sound like it's acceptable, like the murder of civilians is acceptable."

"You know, PR has tried, but I'm not going to sit here and give some politically correct (answer)," Wembanyama said referring to the Spurs media relations staff.

Wembanyama indicated that the deaths of Pretti and Good have made him pause to ask some important questions. "I read the news and sometimes I'm asking very deep questions about my own life, but I'm conscious also that saying everything that's on my mind would have a cost that's too great for me right now, so I'd rather not get into too many details."

Wembanyama was asked about living in a country where there could be repercussions for questioning the actions of federal agents. "For sure, it's terrible," he said. "I know I'm a foreigner. I live in this country. I am concerned, for sure." Asked about Yabusele's comments, Wembanyama said, "I'm always proud of people speaking their mind no matter the subject. And I think it definitely takes some balls, but it might have some pricing right now. I mean, each and every one of us has to decide the price we're willing to pay."

Omari Sankofa: Speaking of Isaiah Stewart... I feel like a lot of people just watch the person from afar. They think, 'Oh, this guy is someone you don't want to mess with.' But I would start with Isaiah Stewart, who's really been their defensive backbone. I would say he's been one of the top rim protectors in the NBA, up there with guys like Rudy Gobert and Wemby, despite being smaller than those guys... But he really brings the intensity on the floor. The 'don't back down,' the 'don't take anything from anyone.' Obviously, he's a guy that has gone viral a few times for some of his actions, but for him, it's really just so much deeper than that. It's his everyday approach. He's just a warrior for the team doing all the dirty work... But like if you only knew him through your interactions with him in the building, you would not know that he has the reputation that he has because otherwise, I mean, he's the ultimate teammate. I think he's just the epitome of the guy who looks out for your team. But if he's on the other team, then God help you out there.

In his appearance on SportsNite, Ian Begley stated that in the ongoing Yabusele trade front, the San Antonio Spurs are a team to watch that might pursue the embattled big man. "In Guerschon Yabusele, I think when this hits the buzzer on deadline day, he'll be with another team. I think they'll figure out where to send him," the longtime Knicks insider and reporter stated. "San Antonio, keep an eye there because Victor Wembanyama, they played together on the French national team."
