Marc Stein: The Heat’s @nbagleague affiliate in Sioux Falls has claimed former NBA lottery pick Dennis Smith Jr. after his recent release by the Wisconsin Herd, league sources say.
Point guard Dennis Smith Jr. is headed to the Wisconsin Herd, the G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks per sources. The move comes shortly after the 27-year-old guard was waived by the Dallas Mavericks last month. Sources say that Smith is scheduled to report to the team next week.
Marc Stein: Will be interesting now to see if Wisconsin’s acquisition of Victor Oladipo makes the Bucks/Herd any more willing to trade Dennis Smith Jr.’s G League rights to the Mavericks’ @TexasLegends affiliate. Wisconsin still holds DSJ’s rights; Milwaukee is in Dallas on Monday night.
Marc Stein: The Mavericks have waived Dalano Banton, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and Dennis Smith Jr. Their @TexasLegends affiliate holds the G League rights on Banton and Robinson-Earl and Dallas remains in talks with Milwaukee to acquire Smith's G League rights from the Wisconsin Herd.

Smith also praised rookie forward Cooper Flagg’s approach and basketball instincts after spending the week alongside him in drills and scrimmages. “He’s super competitive and has a high IQ for the game,” Smith told RG. “He doesn’t necessarily know all the former players or anything like that, but he knows how to play. He plays the right way, he competes hard, and he doesn’t feel like he has to force things. He lets the game come to him but still has an impact — and that’s not easy for a lot of people to do.”
Dennis Smith said the Dallas offense under new assistant coach Jay Triano feels logical and well-structured, built around the team’s stars — particularly Davis. He said the approach has been easy to buy into because it defines who the Mavericks want to play through and gives everyone else clear reads. “I like how the offense is set up — everything makes sense,” Smith stated. “We’ve got our guys that we want to play through, and that’s the game plan. That’s logical to me. I appreciate that approach. And just being on a team this talented — I’ve never been on a team with this level of player.”
Dallas Mavericks PR: The Dallas Mavericks announced today that they have signed guard Dennis Smith Jr. and forward/center Jeremiah Robinson-Earl. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed. In a related move, Dallas has requested waivers on guard D’Moi Hodge.
Marc Stein: As with the Mavericks’ recent signing of Dennis Smith Jr., there does not appear to be roster room for Robinson-Earl, who nonetheless chose to take Dallas’ offer rather than seize upon overseas interest for the chance to try to force his way onto a seemingly full 15-man squad.
Marc Stein: Smith, though, needs a monster training camp to force his way onto Dallas' roster. He'll likely be on a Exhibit 9 deal like Malcolm Brogdon with New York ... but on a team with no room. Among Dallas' motivations for signing Smith, sources say, was securing his G League rights. The Mavericks went to significant lengths (releasing former first-round pick Olivier-Maxence Prosper) just to create the room to re-sign Dante Exum. Signing Smith now makes him eligible to play for the Texas Legends if he can't crack the Mavericks' Opening Night 15-man roster.

Bobby Marks: Roster spot 15 likely comes down to Dennis Smith Jr. and Brandon Williams. The salary protection for Williams increases from $200K to $850K if he is on the roster for the Mavericks first game (1159pm ET.)
Shams Charania: Guard Dennis Smith Jr. has agreed to a one-year deal to return to the Dallas Mavericks, agent Daniel Hazan of Hazan Sports Management tells ESPN. Smith reunites with the franchise that drafted him No. 9 overall in 2017 and now he'll compete in training camp in Dallas.

Ian Begley: Veteran shooter Matt Ryan is on Knicks’ radar for a deal ahead of training camp, per SNY sources. Ryan was with New York last season. Dennis Smith Jr. played well in informal scrimmages today with other Knicks. Club is finalizing training camp invites/decisions. Big man Alex Len is also on NYK radar for a deal. He played well in workout today. Trey Jemison III remains on club’s radar as well
