Lauren L. Williams: Hawks Summer League coach Ronald Nored said the plan for Zacch Risacher is to play all Summer League. “Again, we're about development and so the best way to develop his play, so I like what he's done so far, and we've got the Lakers tomorrow, so we'll see how he does tomorrow.”
Scott Agness: Now official: Assistant coach Ronald Nored is leaving the Pacers to join Quin Snyder’s Atlanta Hawks staff after two seasons. Jenny Boucek moves to the front of the bench. And Jim Boylen, a consultant for the past year, is back for his second stint as assistant coach.
But in Nembhard and Nesmith, they believe they've identified defensive anchors as they try to build what is now an extremely young team into a perennial playoff contender. As the season draws to a close, those two have remained in the starting lineup to get as much experience against the league's top players as possible. "They're both ultra-competitors," said Ronald Nored, the Pacers assistant coach and defensive coordinator and himself a former defensive ace as a point guard at Butler for the Bulldogs' Final Four teams in 2010 and 2011. “But they also have the physical make-up to match-up to those guys. You're getting iso'd one-on-one. You're by yourself. You're getting posted up. Those kind of situations. You're in a ton of pick-and-rolls where you have to fight through a lot. They have the physical make-up to do it and then they have the quickness and the athleticism to also move with those guys. Just taking all that in, the mental side of it and the athleticism, they stand out really among our team in their ability to stop those top guys night in and night out."
The next move for the Pacers, of course, is to build their defense beyond them and center Myles Turner. The Pacers will have to consider defense a priority in the draft and in offseason acquisitions, but there will also be responsibility on Nembhard and Nesmith to bring the defense along. "Both of these guys are so, quite frankly, good defensively," Nored said. "Everybody has areas to improve, but there's not a lot of area to improve for either one of them. I think both of them are quiet guys, and I think they can both take steps as communicators defensively. Myles does a good job of anchoring our defense in a lot of ways. They can be perimeter anchors and communicators. That's a challenge for both of them. Next season use their voice more. We know how they use their bodies, but they need to use their voice more and that's something I'm going to challenge both of them moving forward."

James Boyd: #Pacers assistant Ronald Nored was asked who rookie Bennedict Mathurin reminds him of. “Not saying he’s him or he’s going to be him. … Just with his body and his physicality and his ability to use that to his strengths, it reminds me of when Dwyane Wade used to kick my butt.” pic.twitter.com/iJBiN2PmTE
They’ve gone back to that well, hiring their own, for decades. From coaches Thad Matta to Todd Lickliter to Brad Stevens, Chris Holtmann and Jordan. Most have panned out. Brandon Miller and Jordan did not. Some might push for them to truly have a national search and hire the best available. However, if they choose to stay in the Butler family, it doesn’t get much better than Nored — who is seriously interested in the job, league sources told Fieldhouse Files.
They’re opening up a national search and if athletic director Barry Collier wants to keep it in the Butler family, as they tend to do, Pacers assistant coach (and Butler alum) Ronald Nored makes a lot of sense. And there’s no need for a Zoom call, flight or even a change in address. He’s already here, in his first season as a Pacers assistant coach under Rick Carlisle. “As talented a young coach as I've ever been around,” Carlisle told Fieldhouse Files. “With his knowledge of the game, ability to connect with people and head coaching experience, I certainly understand why they would have strong interest.”
Ronald Nored will soon be returning to Indianapolis. The Pacers are finalizing a contract agreement with the former Butler University guard to be an assistant coach on Rick Carlisle’s staff, league sources told Fieldhouse Files. There has been ongoing dialogue for almost two weeks.
