Former NBA referee and Evansville native Ted Bernardt passed away suddenly on Sunday night in Isabela, Puerto Rico. Bernhardt worked as an NBA official for 17 seasons, from 1988-2006, and also officiated in the BSN (Baloncesto Superior Nacional) in the 1990s. The Evansville native has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Court documents show Walter McCarty submitted his filing earlier this month in Massachusetts, where he resides in the Boston area. He claims to have roughly $2.5 million in assets and under $2 million in liabilities.
During his time with the Washington Bullets, Krause found Earl Monroe at Division II Winston-Salem State and Jerry Sloan at Division II Evansville. That Krause found Monroe is considered his origin story, but Jordan didn’t buy it—after all, the Bullets took Monroe second in 1967, and MJ thought a player drafted second couldn’t really be a secret. If Krause didn’t scout Monroe, “someone would have found him at no. 3 or no. 4,” Jordan said. Krause’s passion for small-school talent was evident in his first year as Bulls GM, as he took Charles Oakley out of Division II Virginia Union with the ninth pick in the 1985 draft.

A large NBA contingent -- scouts, executives and general managers -- has flocked to Evansville, Indiana this weekend. They all want a closer look at Ja Morant. Cleveland Cavaliers GM Koby Altman included. Altman -- and others -- watched the Murray State star dazzle in the Ohio Valley Conference Semifinals, leading his team to the title game with a narrow 76-74 win against Jacksonville State Friday night. Morant scored 29 points, including a game-winning three-point play with eight seconds left. The nation’s leader in assists also added eight to go with six rebounds in 40 minutes.
Jeff Goodman: Evansville is expected to hire Boston Celtics assistant Walter McCarty, sources told ESPN.
Celtics assistant coach Walter McCarty is scheduled to interview for the head coaching position at the University of Evansville on Wednesday, according to a college basketball source. The Purple Aces fired coach Marty Simmons last week. McCarty, an Evansville native, has already completed a telephone interview with Evansville decision-makers, the source said. The school has completed interviews with former Indiana University star and NBA player Calbert Cheaney, and Valparaiso assistant coach David Ragland. Both Cheaney and Ragland are Evansville natives, too.
Sam Vecenie: Told that current Celtics’ assistant coach Walter McCarty is definitely in the mix at Evansville for the head coaching job. Willing to make jump from NBA assistant to CBB head coach. Should be considered at a lot of different mid-major openings right now.
