The team is not retiring his jersey on Thursday. The latest chapter in that saga came at Trae Young’s introductory news conference Jan. 9, when he incorrectly said that Wall’s No. 2 was going up in the rafters at this celebration. Honest mistake. But since Young brought it up: What about that, Ted? “No one should feel insecure about our relationship with John,” Leonsis said in a conference room at the team’s downtown offices earlier this month. “It’s not going to happen on bobblehead night. Really? Do you think we would do something big and important with a bobblehead? We’re not announcing anything (Thursday). “I look at it as, we’re in this long relationship with John. He’s the most important player since I’ve owned the team, and we have a great relationship. I don’t feel like I really need to address it. It will happen when it happens.”

Trae Young holds a player option for $49 million for next season, and both sides are open to an extension, sources told ESPN. But there's also the possibility that Young simply picks up his player option and uses next season as an evaluation period with the Wizards as well. "I came into a kind of similar spot that I did when I was a rookie, but I'm 27 now," he said. "I'm more mature now. It may look and make me feel like I'm older because I've been around for a minute, but I'm not. I'm young enough where I can relate, but old enough I got enough experience. So I'm excited to be around some of these young guys."

In addition, the Wizards view Alex Sarr as their center of the future, league sources told HoopsHype, and despite brief exploratory conversations surrounding Sabonis before acquiring Trae Young, Washington is not inclined to trade for Sabonis at this time. If Washington had been incentivized to take on Sabonis’ contract, the Wizards would’ve considered such an acquisition, HoopsHype has learned.

Jake Fischer: “Miami Heat are interested in Ja Morant but only on what they would consider a bargain deal. Something very equivalent to what Washington Wizards paid for Trae Young. I have no heard much interest in Ja Morant elsewhere”

Given his history with Washington, John Wall said that it would be a good idea for you to ask Trae questions about pick-and-roll coverages and other Xs and Os. What conversations have you been able to have so far? Sarr: “Yeah, most definitely. That’s going to be very important. But we really haven’t had those talks yet. But that’s definitely something that we’re going to be doing. We’ll be talking about the team we’re playing, what’s their coverage and how we want to attack it. That’s definitely something that we’re going to do come game time.”

Is there still a possibility that he can play this season? Dawkins: “Yeah, we’d like to see him with our young guys. I think that’s important.” What importance does that have for the big picture? Dawkins: “It’s important because Trae has a decision to make.” “He’s got the power of choice as a free agent. So you want to make sure that he’s comfortable playing with the young guys, to have the opportunity to play with Alex and to play with Bilal [Coulibaly] and see when they move and how they fit positionally. We have a lot of questions on our team and how we play moving forward. So you want to see that before you make that decision in July.”

Wizards Film Room: Winger when asked if acquiring Trae maybe signals that they’re willing to use their projected $45M in cap space to acquire talent this summer: “We’re not necessarily hitting the gas pedal. Whatever we do with that cap space - it might evaporate in the next two weeks, we just don’t know.”

Wizards Film Room: Winger when asked how the acquisition of Trae fits into the development of the young players: “Trae Young has a very long track record of making players around him better, particularly on the offensive end.”
