Update on the Bulls cap situation after the Sean Kilpatrick waiver: Chicago is still operating as a team over the cap based on the $8.6 (midlevel), $3.4 (bi-annual), $9.0 (trade), $2.6 (trade) and $1.3 (trade) million exception combined with the $10.5 million Noah Vonleh and $1.7 million David Nwaba free agent hold. The maximum cap space that Chicago can create is $20.4 million but would come at the cost of losing the above exceptions. The Bulls have a July 18 guaranteed date on the $1.5 million Paul Zipser contract and August 1 for the $1.6 million Julyan Stone cap hit. July 13 is also the last date to pull the qualifying offer for Nwaba without the consent of the player. The Bulls have 12 guaranteed contracts.
It has been only five games with the Bulls, but the journeyman guard has upped the ante, averaging 13 points in just 22.2 minutes. That included his dynamic 19-point fourth quarter Tuesday against the Hornets in an offensive system Kilpatrick readily admits he still doesn’t always know where to go. “He fits well with what we try to do as far as creating long closeouts and getting into the paint,” coach Fred Hoiberg said. “He’s not afraid of any moment. He’s hitting big shots. He competes at the other end as well. He’s getting to the rim. He’s getting to the free-throw line. We’re spacing the floor and he’s driving and attacking.”

The new CBA will impact the Bulls signing of Sean Kilpatrick in a multitude of ways. For starters, Chicago is still $2M below the minimum salary cap floor. Although Chicago now has $90M counted against the cap, the amount of salary applied to the floor is the amount earned while playing for the Bulls and not the full cap hit. The acquisition of Omer Asik, Noah Vonleh, Willie Reed, Tony Allen and Quincy Pondexter in previous years would have pushed the Bulls above the floor. For trade purposes, only the amount guaranteed (or earned at the time) in 2018-19 and 2019-20 will apply and not the cap hit. For example, if Kilpatrick has a $2M non-guaranteed salary next season, the amount used in a trade will be $0. The Nets will also receive a set-off based on the salary earned with the Bucks, Clippers and Bulls.
Mike McGraw: #Bulls say Sean Kilpatrick will be available for Houston game tomorrow and wear No. 0. The 6-4 SG has played in 43 games for Clippers, Bucks, Nets this season.
KC Johnson: Per team release, Kilpatrick will wear No. 0 versus Rockets. The Big O!
