Klay Thompson's response post-game to a Rockets reporter mentioning that Reed Sheppard's nickname is 'C*caine Curry': “Whoa...I think Reed's a great shooter. I don’t think anyone should be in the same sentence as Steph though. That's crazy."

Will Guillory: Final: Rockets 111, Pistons 104 Big-time road win for the Rockets on the 2nd night of a B2B. Houston improves to 27-16, 5-2 over the last 7. Kevin Durant had 32 points on 11-19 shooting. Alperen Şengün had 19 points and 5 assists. Reed Sheppard scored 18 off the bench. Rockets hold the Pistons to 40.5 percent shooting in the 2nd half. Cade Cunningham only had 12 points and 8 assists. Gritty performance against the top team in the East.

Mark Berman: Tremendous comeback for the Rockets, beating the Spurs 111-106. Houston was down 14 late third before going on a 13-0 run that led to the victory. Rockets have won three consecutive. Reed Sheppard with 21 points in 29 minutes. Largest comeback of the season after being down 16.

Prior to the season, much was made about the Rockets' point guard situation given the ACL injury sustained by Fred VanVleet. Thus far, Ime Udoka has shown increased trust in second year guard Reed Sheppard to handle the ball, which has eased those concerns for now. However, recently, former NBA All-Star Jeff Teague took to his Club 520 podcast to drop some advice for Houston on how to get better in that department. “They need to trade for James Harden… Tell James you want him to play like he was in Brooklyn. Be the point guard… Him and [Kevin Durant] being together… They got a real chance,” said Teague.

Reed Sheppard: Chris Paul's always been like one of my favorite players. Just the way like he can like control the game with his pace and like watching him the way he moves and like the reads that he makes and stuff. Um, I've always just I've always just been a been a fan, but like I love watching like all basketball.

These latest moves have been additive, with the Rockets having built this post-James Harden era core by way of the draft (Alperen Şengün at No. 16 in 2021, Jabari Smith Jr. third in 2022, Tari Eason 17th in 2022, Amen Thompson fourth in 2023, Reed Sheppard third in 2024). “They have drafted well, built a deep team in a tough Western Conference while managing tax aprons,” said one executive who voted the Rockets second. “(They) hired a good coach and built an overall team identity, then added KD for cheap. “From where they were only a few years ago, they have done a good job turning it around.” Said another, who also voted the Rockets second: “High-end talent, a willingness to be bold, (and) good asset management.” — Sam Amick

“It was a heartbreaker for sure because you know how much Fred can bring to the team with his leadership and his skills,” Thompson said. “But at the same time, it’s a next-man-up kind of thing. He wouldn’t want anyone to sulk off of him, so it’s the next man up. [Udoka] just told me, ‘You were going to get more on-ball reps anyway, but now you and Reed’s reps are going to be boosted.’ I was just excited for the opportunity.”

Denver Nuggets head coach David Adelman issued his team a warning about Houston Rockets guard Reed Sheppard ahead of Friday night’s NBA Cup matchup. “I think at any moment, he can get hot and flip a game,” Adelman said. “You have to guard him. He can get hot and hit five threes in a quarter. That’s what that kid can do.” Adelman’s words turned into reality as Sheppard’s second-quarter explosion helped him earn a career-high 27 points in Houston’s 112-109 loss to Denver on the evening.

“That’s the Reed we like to see,” Durant said Wednesday. “I think these last three games, he’s just playing freely and not thinking too much, playing under control and knocking down shots. It’s a make-or-miss league, so if you continue to work on your game and become efficient, then the rest of the game is pretty easy for you. And he set himself up to be efficient tonight.”

“Initially, we want guys to have to beat us over the dribble or, two, east west. The blow-bys are what hurt us the worst,” Udoka said. “But I would say with Reed, his instincts are really good, you just don’t want him to rely on that. Do your job, guard your guard early and then if you get beat or are in a bad position, do what you do naturally. So there are times where it’s a gamble but also times where he’s coming to make a play and we encourage that on guys like Antetokounmpo or some of the scorers that we want to show a crowd on. And he’s one of the best at it.”

Danielle Lerner: Reed Sheppard: “Amen told me in the weight room just a minute ago, he said, ‘But if you take one more dribble when you're open and there’s no shooting, I’m gonna punch you in the face.’” I just fact checked the above quote with Amen, who confirmed, “I did say that.” 😂
